TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Some nasty storms moved through the big bend and South Georgia yesterday evening. Those were tied to the upper-level low in southwest Florida. <\/p>\n
Today\u2019s non-tropical low<\/p>\n
The upper-level low is NOT tropical right now, but the National Hurricane Center is keeping eyes on this, as tropical organization looks possible this weekend. <\/p>\n
It is too early to get specific about potential impacts from a tropical system since there is not a well-defined low-level circulation. Whether this low becomes tropical or not, the weather story does not change. Higher rain coverage is expected this weekend. <\/p>\n
Rain totals between 1 and 3 inches this weekend, some higher amounts underneath persistent thunderstorms. <\/p>\n
The most likely scenario is for the upper low to become a surface low- or low-end tropical system this weekend. This will bring bands of showers and thunderstorms to the area this afternoon and evening. The tornado risk is very low today, and some storms will produce gusty winds that could take down branches or limbs. <\/p>\n
Winds will not be strong outside of storms, so no need to be concerned about storm surge flooding or tropical storm force winds with the Gulf low. <\/p>\n
A stronger solution is unlikely<\/p>\n
IF the system happens to beat the odds and strengthen quicker, the storm will likely stay well south in the open Gulf waters. A stronger system would actually keep the bulk of the moisture away from the area next week. The tropical-like weather would also stay to our south. This solution seems highly unlikely right now.<\/p>\n
Sunday storm chance<\/p>\n
Sunday will start in the low to mid 70s with scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon. Some storms will bring gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Since this appears to remain weak, tropical-like impacts are NOT expected. Just beneficial rain. A chance of development peaks this weekend as the low sits over very warm waters and no significant wind shear. <\/p>\n
No big changes ahead<\/p>\n
The low hangs out in the Gulf early next week, keeping rain chances high throughout much of next week. Highs in the low 90s. Lows in the upper 70s. The chance of development starts to diminish early next week as the environment becomes more volatile by Tuesday\/Wednesday this week.<\/p>\n
