Zach Durfee may have arrived in Jacksonville as a seventh-round pick, but his path to the NFL is anything but ordinary. From walking away from football to becoming an anonymous ESPN sensation, here are five things you probably didn’t know about one of the Jaguars’ most intriguing developmental prospects.

Long before NFL scouts were discussing Zach Durfee’s pass-rushing potential, many believed his future lay on the basketball court. Growing up in the tiny town of Tyler, Minnesota, Durfee excelled in multiple sports, but basketball was arguably where he shone brightest. Standing well over six feet tall with impressive athleticism, he averaged more than 20 points and 10 rebounds per game during his senior season, earning all-state recognition and attracting genuine collegiate interest.

Football, meanwhile, was almost a side project. He played quarterback, receiver and defensive end for Dawson-Boyd High School, but unlike many future NFL players, he wasn’t immersed in elite camps or travelling across the country for recruiting showcases. Instead, he developed as a well-rounded athlete in a rural community where playing multiple sports was the norm rather than the exception.

That background may have helped shape the player Jacksonville eventually drafted. Basketball develops footwork, balance and lateral quickness—traits that translate remarkably well to rushing the passer. Watch Durfee explode off the edge or change direction in pursuit, and it’s easy to spot the influence of years spent defending guards and attacking the basket.

It’s a reminder that some NFL careers don’t begin with endless football training. Sometimes they start in a small-town gymnasium, chasing rebounds rather than quarterbacks.

Durfee’s journey to the NFL is unusual because, for a while, it looked like there wouldn’t be one at all.

After graduating from high school, he enrolled at North Dakota State—a powerhouse of FCS football that has produced stars including Carson Wentz and Christian Watson. Yet Durfee wasn’t part of that programme. Instead, he attended as a regular student and stepped away from competitive football altogether.

Many players lose interest during that period and never return. Durfee did the opposite.

Eventually transferring to the University of Sioux Falls, he committed himself fully to football and, crucially, to learning defensive end. Unlike many NFL edge rushers who have spent a decade refining pass-rush moves, Durfee was still discovering the nuances of the position well into his college career. Every season became an opportunity to learn hand placement, leverage, counter moves and the technical details that elite prospects often master years earlier.

That makes his rise even more remarkable. Rather than benefiting from years of specialist coaching, he compressed his development into a relatively short period before attracting NFL attention.

It’s one of the reasons scouts remain intrigued by his long-term upside. Jacksonville aren’t simply drafting the player Durfee is today—they’re betting on what he could become after receiving full-time professional coaching.

One Obstacle After Another

Momentum and misfortune seemed to arrive hand in hand throughout Durfee’s college career.

After bursting onto the scene at Sioux Falls, he earned an opportunity to transfer to Washington, giving him the chance to prove himself against Power Four competition. It should have been the breakthrough he’d worked towards for years.

Instead, setbacks followed almost immediately.

Transfer eligibility rules limited his opportunities, while injuries repeatedly interrupted his progress. An elbow problem sidelined him, only for turf toe—a notoriously frustrating injury for explosive athletes—to strike later. Just as he began building momentum again, further physical issues arrived to halt it once more.

For many players, that sequence would have been enough to derail an NFL dream.

Instead, Durfee continued earning respect inside Washington’s program. Coaches and teammates consistently praised his work ethic and professionalism, eventually voting him as one of the Huskies’ team captains despite his interrupted playing career. That recognition arguably says more about his character than any sack total ever could.

NFL evaluators often talk about resilience being difficult to measure. Durfee’s college career provided plenty of evidence. Every time circumstances knocked him backwards, he found a way to return, earning an NFL opportunity through perseverance as much as production.

Few seventh-round picks have entered the NFL with quite as much mystery surrounding them.

In the build-up to the 2026 NFL Draft, ESPN released one of its annual anonymous prospect features, profiling a player simply known as “Prospect X.” The article detailed an unconventional football journey, multiple injuries, personal adversity and a determination to reach the NFL despite repeated setbacks.

Fans immediately began playing detective.

Across social media, particularly among Washington supporters, readers dissected every clue. They examined references to a basketball background, small-town upbringing, injuries, relationships and even favourite local restaurants, slowly narrowing the possibilities before concluding that the mystery player had to be Zach Durfee.

The speculation generated far more attention than most late-round prospects ever receive. Instead of quietly preparing for the draft, Durfee became the subject of an online guessing game involving thousands of college football fans.

When his identity was eventually confirmed, many people who had never watched him play suddenly knew his story.

It’s a fitting reflection of Durfee’s football career. He’s rarely taken the conventional path, and even his introduction to the wider football world came wrapped in secrecy rather than headlines.

For a player selected late on Day Three, that’s a remarkably unique way to arrive in the NFL.

On paper, seventh-round draft picks rarely possess elite athletic traits.

Despite slipping to the latter stages of the draft, his testing numbers placed him among the more explosive edge defenders available. At around 6-foot-5 and more than 250 pounds, he reportedly ran in the mid-4.5s over 40 yards while posting a vertical jump approaching 39 inches. Those are eye-catching figures for any pass rusher and help explain why scouts remained intrigued despite his limited résumé.

The biggest question was never his physical ability.

It was whether NFL teams had seen enough healthy football.

Because injuries repeatedly interrupted his time at Washington, evaluators were forced to project rather than judge a complete body of work. They could see flashes of explosion, length and relentless effort, but not the sustained production usually expected from draftable edge rushers.

That combination makes Durfee one of Jacksonville’s most fascinating developmental prospects. His draft position reflects uncertainty rather than a lack of talent.

If he stays healthy and continues developing the finer points of playing defensive end, the Jaguars may eventually look back on Pick No. 233 as one of the biggest bargains of the 2026 draft.

Late-round selections often succeed because of effort. Durfee has that in abundance. What makes him different is that he also possesses the rare athletic tools to give himself a genuine chance.

[8
116,118,26216,117
post-345515","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-jacksonville","tag-jacksonville","tag-jacksonville-headlines","tag-jacksonville-jaguars-draft","tag-jacksonville-news
["GET
