{"id":346125,"date":"2026-07-20T15:50:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T15:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/346125\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T15:50:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T15:50:15","slug":"florida-sees-huge-jump-in-new-unemployment-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/346125\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida sees huge jump in new unemployment claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After about a month of falling first-time unemployment claims, Florida saw a wild spike in filings for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/ui\/data.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">week ending July 11<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The U.S. Department of Labor (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">DOL<\/a>) figures show there were 7,133 first-time jobless claims in the Sunshine State in the second week of July. That figure is up by 2,598 over the 4,535 claims for the week ending July 4. <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/807292-july-sees-sharp-drop-in-initial-jobless-claims-in-florida\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">The previous report<\/a> was the lowest figure for Florida in months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The latest DOL report shows the national figures also increased. There were 244,826 new filings across America for the week ending July 11. That\u2019s a jump of 18,834 claims, or an 8.3% increase.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the numbers did increase nationally, the jump isn\u2019t as steep as DOL analysts had expected. Economists with the agency had projected a jump of 28,574 claims last week, or a 12.6% hike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the year-over-year comparison, there was a drop in new claims. There were 261,111 for the comparable week in 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kathleenpeters.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-800314 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Peters728x90-May-15-2023-at-17.01.44-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"91\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While first-time claims appear to be rising in July, the general unemployment rate for June dropped in Florida. <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.myflorida.com\/go\/FloridaCommerce\/2817100\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">FloridaCommerce<\/a>, the state\u2019s business development bureau, released the <a href=\"https:\/\/lmsresources.labormarketinfo.com\/library\/press\/release.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">unemployment rate for June<\/a> on Friday, showing it fell to 4.7%, down from 4.8% in May.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The FloridaCommerce report said there were 525,000 Floridians out of work out of a labor force of about 11.14 million. Five out of the 10 major industries in Florida gained workers in June.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Education and health services led the way in June, with 39,000 jobs added, a 2.5% increase. Other sectors with the most jobs added include the professional and business services industries and the leisure and hospitality sectors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The general unemployment rate for June was a big jump from a year ago, however. The jobless rate for June 2025 was 3.8%, nearly a point lower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Still, it\u2019s the first unemployment rate decrease in well over a year and marks a change from steady increases this year<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anheuser-busch.com\/newsroom\/anheuser-busch-investing-in-jacksonville-facilities-to-drive-local-economic-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-772090 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Jacksonville_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the latest unemployment rate is positive for Florida, the 4.7% state figure is still higher than the national unemployment rate.
