World War II Navy veteran Julius Woods is still working as a South Florida security guard as he approaches age 100.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On Saturday \u2013 as Woods\u2019 birthday and retirement date neared \u2013 he was honored by the community.<\/p>\n
Dozens of residents, family members and friends came out to celebrate his 100th birthday and retirement \u2013 which are both in August.<\/p>\n
Captain Woods is the chief security guard at the entrance to Belle Meade Island in Miami and has been at his post for more than 25 years.<\/p>\n
Island residents dedicated a plaque on the guardhouse in his honor. It reads: \u201cA legacy of service and inspiration. Thank you for your leadership and light.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Commissioner Christine King presented Woods with a centennial salute from the City of Miami.<\/p>\n
Neighbors also contributed $100 each and the money added up. Woods was presented with a $5,000 check. <\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t say enough that I served y\u2019all and I hope that you were satisfied. I will always miss you.
