Before running a successful coffee counter culture in Stuart, Tanya served as a logistics officer in the Air Force, spending time in locations like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. \u201cMy first assignment in Turkey during [Operation] Desert Storm really showed me the power of military partnerships,\u201d she recalls. \u201cThose leadership and teamwork skills have been invaluable in running Googan.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both Tanya and Jim retired from the Air Force to run a firm that trained combat medics. But they eventually sold that business and moved to South Florida. Still, retirement wasn\u2019t in the cards. \u201cWe missed creating something that made a positive impact,\u201d Tanya says. \u201cSo we used what we learned and started Googan Coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n
The name \u201cGoogan\u201d is a playful nod to the fishing world\u2014a term used to describe a person who lacks serious skills. \u201cIt\u2019s a bit cheeky,\u201d Tanya says. The name serves as a reminder, she explains: \u201cWe don\u2019t take ourselves too seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

Armed with an agreed-upon store name and their own military might, the Mitchells opened the first Googan Coffee outpost in North Stuart during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges many businesses faced during that time, Googan grew a steady customer base. \u201cThe community embraced us,\u201d Tanya says. \u201cWhen a location in downtown Stuart became available, we couldn\u2019t resist.\u201d There\u2019s also a mobile truck, known as the Googan Express. Originally intended as a tool to attract attention on U.S. 1, the truck has become a hit at local events. \u201cIt\u2019s just so darn cute,\u201d Tanya says.<\/p>\n

With two locations and the caf\u00e9 on wheels, Tanya says the focus now is still the same as it was on day one\u2014creating a positive environment for employees and customers alike. \u201cWe have over 35 staff members, and we treat them with respect and appreciation,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen they\u2019re happy, it translates into better service for our customers.\u201d For Tanya, the coffee, tea, and energy drinks Googan serves are just as important as the community they serve them to.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s the Mitchells\u2019 next campaign? It\u2019s no surprise they have plans to expand. Next up: opening a roastery, unveiling an e-commerce site, and launching a caf\u00e9. \u201cWe started with a five-year plan to build and sell the business,\u201d Tanya says, \u201cbut now we\u2019re focused on growing the brand and continuing to make an impact.\u201d<\/p>\n
