From the nascent sound of bluegrass that charmed hardscrabble hillbilly honkytonks, rural schoolhouse stages, and the crowning glory of the Grand Ole Opry to the present-day culture-buzz of viral videos and digital streams, McCoury is the living link. On primetime and late-night television talk shows, there is McCoury. From headlining sold-out concerts to music festivals of all genres, including one carrying his namesake, there is McCoury. Where audiences number in the tens of thousands, and admirers as diverse as country-rock icon Steve Earle and jamband royalty Phish count as a few among hundreds, there is McCoury.

Emerging from humble beginnings in York County, Pennsylvania, nearly 80 years ago, McCoury was not the likeliest of candidates for legendary status. As a teen, he was captivated by the banjo playing of one of its masters, Earl Scruggs, and decided he’d be a banjo picker, too. The Baltimore/Washington, D.C., bar scene of the early 1960s was lively and rough. McCoury caught a break, joining Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in early 1963. Considered the Father of Bluegrass, Monroe transformed McCoury, moving him from the banjo to guitar, anointing him lead singer, and providing him with a priceless trove of bluegrass tutelage direct from the source. Countless hours of recording sessions and miles of tireless touring dotted the decades. Del carried on and carried with him the hallowed traditions of the form and its dedicated following.

Their latest release, “Songs of Love and Life,” is a 15-song collection. The album follows 2021’s celebrated, Grammy-nominated release, “Almost Proud,” and once again features McCoury touching down on a diverse set of tracks — vintage and contemporary — as he and his crackerjack band nod to icons Kenny Rogers, Roy Orbison, and Elvis Presley, as well as welcome next-generation talent, Molly Tuttle, to the party.

Beach Theatre

Fleetwood Gold

ST. It’s saying, ‘I have been so many different things for you, why not be your punching bag as well?’ I wanted to marry the grit and punch of an arena rock song with moments of Quincy Jones and Genesis. Visit www.theritzybor.com.

The tongue-in-cheek story of Gwar is carved across the history of this barren and hopeless planet, but Gwar themselves are not of this world, according to Metal Blade Records. Their story begins in the deepest reaches of outer space. Long ago, the beings who would become the rock band Gwar were part of an elite fighting force, the Scumdogs of the Universe.

For eons, they served as thralls to a supreme being known only as the Master. But one by one, each future member of the band earned a glaring reputation for being an intergalactic failure. They were banished, sent away on a fool’s errand to conquer an insignificant planet floating in a dark corner of the universe: the planet Earth.

Once here, Gwar shaped the face of the globe, destroying and rebuilding the natural world, and giving rise to all of human history. Aliens to some, gods and demons to others, these erstwhile Scumdogs helped create the human race.

A less embellished biography of the band places their formation in Richmond, Virginia, in 1984. Their thematic and visual concept revolves around an elaborate, sci-fi themed mythology. Their music and performances feature over-the-top violent, sexual and scatological humor as well as social and political satire.

Gwar’s most recent album, “The New Dark Ages,” was released in 2022.

Bilheimer Capitol Theatre Del McCoury Band CLEARWATER — The Grammy Award winning Del McCoury Band will perform on…

[13
24246,24247,24248,19479,5725,24249,24245,5195,202,204,203,199,201,200
post-34830","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-st-petersburg","tag-chiodos","tag-del-mccoury-band","tag-fleetwood-gold","tag-gwar","tag-jannus-live","tag-mannheim-steamroller","tag-ritz-ybor","tag-ruth-eckerd-hall","tag-st-pete","tag-st-pete-headlines","tag-st-pete-news","tag-st-petersburg","tag-st-petersburg-headlines","tag-st-petersburg-news
["GET
