{"id":348977,"date":"2026-07-22T20:10:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T20:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/348977\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T20:10:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T20:10:08","slug":"florida-supreme-court-denies-stay-for-execution-of-man-set-to-be-states-oldest-inmate-executed-in-modern-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/348977\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida Supreme Court denies stay for execution of man set to be state&#8217;s oldest inmate executed in modern history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/tag\/florida-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Florida Supreme Court<\/a> on Tuesday denied the request for a stay of execution for Dominick Occhicone, one of two death row inmates scheduled to die by lethal injection on July 28.<\/p>\n<p>Occhicone, who also awaits a similar request before the U.S. Supreme Court, killed his former girlfriend&#8217;s parents four decades ago in Pasco County.<\/p>\n<p>At 80, Occhicone is set to be the oldest inmate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/tag\/execution\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">executed<\/a> by the state in the modern era.<\/p>\n<p>His execution is set for 6 p.m. at Florida State Prison in Stark.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/james-aren-duckett-new-execution-date-signed-desantis\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">James Aren Duckett,<\/a> 68, a former Mascotte police officer convicted in the 1987 death of 11-year-old Teresa McAbee, is scheduled to die at noon the same day.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to Tuesday&#8217;s ruling, the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops sent a letter to Gov.
