FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)\u2014 American Legion Post 192<\/a>, a historic gathering place for African American veterans since 1938, faces an uncertain future as attorneys execute a levy against the property to settle a judgment from a 2023 injury lawsuit.<\/p>\n

Former Post Commander Darian Montgomery said the case was resolved in court, but the post didn’t have insurance at the time. The legal action could force the post to sell the building.<\/p>\n

For generations, the post has welcomed veterans looking for camaraderie, support and a sense of home. It was created by African American veterans during a time they weren’t welcomed at many other posts.<\/p>\n

“Over the years, we provided charity to this community beyond most organizations,” Montgomery said. “We provided charity to the churches. We get school give school giveaways, haircuts, and food. We even paid bills at one point. We sponsored baseball teams. We\u00a0sponsored softball teams. Trips to college campuses, etc. This has been a significant pillar in this community for many years.”<\/p>\n

That impact is something Lewis Freeman knows firsthand. The Marine Corps veteran said when he returned home struggling after his military service, the people inside Post 192 did more than listen.<\/p>\n

They helped him rebuild his life, including finding a permanent place to live.<\/p>\n

“Yes, look around. Help me get this house, you know,” Freeman said. “But I’m not bragging anything. But it is a good organization, and I would encourage any soldier out there, or anybody, come in and talk.”<\/p>\n

Post leaders said they have until September to raise $110,000. If they can’t, the property could be sold.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"FORT MYERS, Fla.
