TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition unveiled the Black Glass Necklace, one of the rarest items recovered from the ship’s wreck site, marking its first public debut since the liner sank in 1912, RMS Titanic said in a news release issued Wednesday.

The necklace, featuring heart-shaped and octagonal black glass beads, was painstakingly conserved after being found in fragments during a 2000 expedition by RMS Titanic. Experts revealed the artifact during a live demonstration. It also showcased conservation work on “Little Piece,” a two-ton section of the ship’s hull and the second-largest artifact ever recovered, the release says.

“This necklace is a powerful reminder that every artifact tells a personal story,” Tomasina Ray, president and director of collections of RMS Titanic, Inc. said in a statement. “From the craftsmanship to the materials, it offers a once-in-a-lifetime glimpse into the style, sentiment, and everyday life of Titanic’s passengers. Our meticulous conservation efforts allow us to protect and share those stories with the world.”

According to the release, the necklace was recovered from the ship’s 15-square-mile debris field. The piece reflects early 20th-century fashion and mourning customs, when black jewelry was often made from materials like French jet. RMS Titanic Inc. has recovered more than 5,500 artifacts over nine expeditions spanning nearly four decades, each piece offering insight into the lives lost and the ship’s legacy.

The Orlando exhibition features more than 300 authentic artifacts and dramatic room recreations, including “Little Piece.” For hours and ticket information, visit TitanicOrlando.com.

If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
