HIALEAH, Fla. \u2014 A new era is set to begin in Hialeah after the city elected Bryan Calvo as its next mayor. <\/p>\n
He won Tuesday\u2019s election in a landslide, receiving 52% of the vote and securing an outright win over his four challengers.<\/p>\n
\u201cRight now, we\u2019re in the process of creating a government,\u201d he said. \u201cThe time for campaigning has ended.\u201d<\/p>\n
Calvo campaigned on what he called \u201ca new chapter for Hialeah,\u201d promising to lower taxes and water fees, cut out lifelong pensions for elected officials and tackle corruption head-on.<\/p>\n
But the new mayor will face tough challenges right away, including ongoing legal battles over water quality and billing.<\/p>\n
Miami-Dade County has blamed the city for its pricing structure, something Calvo says he plans to address directly. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe understand the way forward is to minimize the risk and the lost to city residents,\u201d he said. \u201cObviously an $18 million loss would be devastating to city residents.\u201d<\/p>\n
Calvo has also called for ending taxpayer-funded pensions for city leaders, and it\u2019s also worth noting that as Washington D.C. debates the future of Obamacare subsidies, Hialeah has one of the highest numbers of residents who depend on those extended benefits.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not a congressman, I wasn\u2019t elected to be the next president,\u201d said Calvo. \u201cI\u2019m here focused on these local issues. I don\u2019t think the city should be bankrolling in any sort of extended subsidies.\u201d <\/p>\n
Calvo becomes Hialeah\u2019s first newly elected mayor in five years, stepping into office with promises of change and a city watching closely to see what he does next.<\/p>\n
