Shevrin Jones wants to help Floridians facing economic hardship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He just filed legislation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/170\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">SB 170<\/a>) to create the \u201cPeople\u2019s Relief Program,\u201d a state-funded safety net within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myflfamilies.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Department of Children and Families<\/a> for struggling residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The initiative, if approved, would provide state-funded grants to assist with essential expenses, including housing, childcare, utilities, health care and property insurance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFrom utility bills to property insurance premiums, families across the state are feeling squeezed by rising costs and working harder than ever just to make ends meet,\u201d\u00a0Jones said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Legislature has a responsibility to ensure long-term financial stability for Floridians, and the People\u2019s Relief Act is an essential step toward achieving that goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinpointresults.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PinpointAd_728x90.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"79\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-309437\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SB 170, which pends a House companion, would depend on yearly appropriations by the Legislature.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eligible recipients must have lived in Florida for at least one year before applying, show proof of changed circumstances that make it difficult to pay household expenses and provide documentation for utility, insurance, childcare or health care costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis should be a bipartisan effort because economic security and having the freedom of stability is an essential need for everyone to thrive,\u201d Jones said before issuing a challenge to GOP lawmakers in Tallahassee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf my colleagues truly believe in making Florida more affordable, this is the vehicle to make that possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jones, a Miami Gardens Democrat, introduced SB 170 the same day he filed several other measures, including ones aimed at school teacher training and mentorship, public school athletics and a bill to <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/760596-shevrin-jones-refiles-bill-to-safeguard-arrested-pregnant-women\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">safeguard arrested pregnant women<\/a>, which he\u2019s carried for multiple Sessions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cflpublicaffairs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-680168 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CFPA-Digital-Ad-Sunburn-728x90-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 2026 Legislative Session begins regular meetings Jan. 13.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Interim committee meetings are ongoing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sen.
