Tampa, FL – ZooTampa has welcomed its first manatee calf in more than a decade, marking an important milestone for the zoo’s ongoing wildlife conservation efforts.<\/p>\n
The female West Indian manatee calf, named Beatrix, was born to her mother, Mary Lou, and weighed approximately 76 pounds at birth. <\/p>\n
Zoo officials said the newborn is healthy and continues to nurse regularly while remaining under the close watch of animal care and veterinary staff.<\/p>\n
Mary Lou, who weighs about 1,230 pounds, has lived at ZooTampa after being rescued years ago. <\/p>\n
Care teams are monitoring both mother and calf to ensure the young manatee continues reaching key developmental milestones during her first weeks of life.<\/p>\n
Zoo officials said the birth is significant because manatees continue to face a number of threats in the wild, including boat strikes, habitat loss, cold stress and limited food supplies.<\/p>\n
The arrival of a healthy calf provides researchers and animal care specialists with an opportunity to learn more about the species while supporting long term conservation efforts.<\/p>\n
ZooTampa operates one of the country’s leading manatee rehabilitation facilities, caring for injured, orphaned and sick manatees in partnership with wildlife agencies.<\/p>\n
Many rescued animals are eventually released back into Florida waters after completing rehabilitation.<\/p>\n
The zoo said Beatrix’s birth reflects years of specialized care and conservation work.<\/p>\n
Staff members will continue monitoring the calf as she grows alongside her mother while educating visitors about the importance of protecting Florida’s manatee population and the habitats the species depends on for survival.<\/p>\n
