As the cost of living continues to rise, residents are asking an important question.\u00a0 While government cannot control every price, it can control how responsibly it\u00a0 spends, how efficiently it operates, and how many opportunities it creates for the\u00a0 people it serves.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over the past month, I\u2019ve had the privilege of speaking with residents, business owners, and young\u00a0 professionals throughout our community. Regardless of their background or profession, one\u00a0 concern continues to come up:\u00a0<\/p>\n

The cost of living.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Families are feeling it at the grocery store. Young professionals are feeling it when they search for\u00a0 their first home. Seniors are feeling it as insurance premiums and HOA fees continue to rise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The question is no longer whether Miami-Dade is becoming more expensive. The question is: What can government actually do about it?\u00a0<\/p>\n

While no single level of government controls the cost of living, I believe local government has a\u00a0 responsibility to be part of the solution.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That starts with leading by example.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This year, I proposed reducing Doral\u2019s operating millage rate for the second time during my\u00a0 administration. If approved, Doral will continue to have the lowest municipal operating millage\u00a0 rate in Miami-Dade County. Yet at the same time, we continue investing in public safety, parks,\u00a0 infrastructure, and the quality of life our residents expect.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That didn\u2019t happen by accident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It happened because we challenged ourselves to operate more efficiently, pursue public-private\u00a0 partnerships, invest in revenue-generating assets, and look for innovative ways to deliver\u00a0 exceptional services without simply asking taxpayers to pay more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To me, that\u2019s what responsible government looks like.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Floridians deserve meaningful tax relief. Families are working hard, and government should\u00a0 always look for ways to reduce the burden on taxpayers. At the same time, lasting tax relief\u00a0 requires thoughtful planning. Every community depends on essential local services\u2014from police\u00a0 officers and parks to road maintenance and infrastructure\u2014and any long-term changes should\u00a0 preserve the quality of life that makes our neighborhoods strong.<\/p>\n

The goal shouldn\u2019t be to choose between lower taxes and strong communities. The goal should be\u00a0 to achieve both. But affordability is about more than taxes. Government also has a responsibility\u00a0 to create opportunity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Every company we attract to Miami-Dade, every permit we streamline, every unnecessary\u00a0 regulation we eliminate, and every high-paying job we help create gives families a better chance\u00a0 to succeed. Economic development isn\u2019t just about attracting investment it\u2019s about ensuring our\u00a0 residents benefit from it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Doral has shown that fiscal discipline, responsible budgeting, economic growth, and strategic\u00a0 public-private partnerships can work together. They are not competing priorities. They are the\u00a0 foundation for making government more efficient while protecting the services residents depend\u00a0 on.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The American Dream has always been built on opportunity the belief that if you work hard, you\u00a0 can build a better future for your family.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Government cannot create that dream.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it has a responsibility to make sure it doesn\u2019t stand in its way.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These are the conversations Miami-Dade should be having.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Next month, let\u2019s talk about something every resident experiences every day: transportation.\u00a0 Because when we talk about the cost of living, we should also talk about the cost of time.\u00a0<\/p>\n
