The driver, whose name was not immediately released by the sheriff\u2019s office, was arrested on a dangerous excessive speeding charge and taken to the St. Johns County Jail.<\/p>\n

It makes it a criminal offense to drive at least 50 mph over the posted speed limit or to travel at least 100 mph in a way that threatens people or property or interferes with another vehicle.<\/p>\n A first conviction can carry up to 30 days in jail, a fine of up to $500 or both. A second or subsequent conviction can result in up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.<\/p>\n Drivers convicted of two or more violations within five years can also have their driving privileges revoked for at least 180 days.<\/p>\n The St. Johns County arrest is the latest of several \u201csuper speeder\u201d cases reported across Florida since the law took effect.<\/p>\n A Corvette driver was arrested after St. Johns County deputies said the car reached 130 mph in a 45-mph zone under Florida\u2019s super speeder law. (St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office)<\/p>\n In June, Port St. Lucie police arrested a motorcyclist accused of traveling 110 mph<\/a> in a clearly posted 45-mph zone. Police said the rider was going 65 mph over the speed limit, making him subject to the tougher criminal penalties under the new law.<\/p>\n Port St. Lucie police also arrested a 23-year-old driver in May after officers said he was clocked at 90 mph in a 40-mph zone<\/a> on Northwest Prima Vista Boulevard near Sportsman\u2019s Park. That driver was traveling exactly 50 mph over the limit.<\/p>\n In another local case, police made the city\u2019s first arrest under the new law in September 2025 after a driver was accused of traveling 90 mph in a 40-mph zone on Southwest Airoso Boulevard<\/a>.<\/p>\n CBS12 News has also reported several recent cases involving speeds of 100 mph or more, including a Martin County pursuit in which deputies said a driver exceeded 100 mph<\/a> on State Road 710 and forced other vehicles off the road.<\/p>\n In February, a 21-year-old was arrested following a pursuit that Florida Highway Patrol investigators said reached approximately 120 mph on Interstate 95 in Palm Beach County<\/a>.
