MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) – Authorities are investigating a deputy-involved shooting in North Beach that left a teenage boy dead and led deputies to take a young man into custody.<\/p>\n
Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office units responded to the scene of the incident along the 700 block of 81st Street, near Hawthorne Avenue, just south of Surfside, Friday morning.<\/p>\n
MDSO officials said they responded to an apartment to serve a search warrant having to do with possession of firearms by convicted felons.<\/p>\n
According to Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, deputies announced their presence, knocked multiple times and identified themselves before making entry into the residence.<\/p>\n
Investigators said the 17-year-old subject walked out of his bedroom while holding a handgun with an extended magazine, and a deputy fired their firearm in response.<\/p>\n
Area residents told 7News that they heard three or four gunshots around at around 6 a.m.<\/p>\n
First responders rendered aid to the teen, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
Cordero-Stutz said deputies took the 18-year-old subject into custody without incident.<\/p>\n
7Skyforce hovered above a heavy law enforcement presence near the apartment building.<\/p>\n
A woman at the scene told 7News that she believes the two subjects are her sons.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I pulled up, this was going on. My 1-year-old daughter was in the police\u2019s hands. I grabbed her; she was wet. They said they had two kids detained, which was my 13-year-old son and my 18-year-old. They homeboy, but he like my son. They in the back of the car,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The woman said she then approached deputies.<\/p>\n
\u201cI asked, \u2018Could I talk to them?\u2019 They told me no. So OK, cool, I\u2019m asking them where my other son is. They\u2019re telling me they don\u2019t know. \u2018Oh, he might be on the other side of the street in the back of the police car on the other side of the road,’\u201d she said. \u201cI go down there, my son ain\u2019t down there. They\u2019re telling me they don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on. \u2018Oh, no, we don\u2019t know. We don\u2019t think so. Nobody\u2019s been shot,\u2019 but I\u2019m telling her, \u2018I see this on the news. I know the police officer shot somebody. This is my address.\u2019 So I see the white thing. I say, I see the tent. I know what\u2019s going on. \u2018Just tell me if it\u2019s my son.\u2019 They have yet to come talk to me. tell me anything. So if they not telling y\u2019all nothing, I can promise you I\u2019m the mama. There\u2019s my house down there, that they\u2019re in front of. I ain\u2019t heard nothing. They won\u2019t even come face me yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Investigators said both subjects are registered gang members and have an extensive criminal past involving firearms. Both were wearing ankle monitors at the time of the shooting.<\/p>\n
Speaking with reporters hours later, Cordero-Stutz said the shooting underscores the dangers that deputies face on a daily basis.<\/p>\n
\u201cSearch warrants are always one of our most dangerous actions that we and all law enforcement face. We do everything that we can to be proactive, to identify, to let people know. Part of the command is to say , \u2018I\u2019s the police, it is the sheriff\u2019s office, and come out with your hands up where we can see it,’\u201d she said. \u201cClearly, this individual, who was already in violation of the law and committing multiple felonies, chose to exit armed and confront our sheriff\u2019s deputy.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n
