{"id":351469,"date":"2026-07-24T19:45:20","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T19:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/351469\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T19:45:20","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T19:45:20","slug":"central-florida-man-arrested-after-emergency-kicks-off-for-flesh-eating-parasites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/351469\/","title":{"rendered":"Central Florida man arrested after emergency kicks off for flesh-eating parasites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">TALLAHASSEE, Fla. \u2013 A Central Florida man was arrested after being accused of violating recent emergency rules regarding a flesh-eating parasite, according to Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Simpson announced the arrest on Friday, saying that the man \u2014 identified as Roger Rodriguez Vega of Maitland \u2014 allegedly re-entered the state with livestock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In a release, officials with Simpson\u2019s office said that Vega had been denied entry at a Florida agricultural inspection station for failing to provide veterinary inspection documentation required under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/florida\/2026\/06\/12\/flesh-eating-parasite-drives-state-of-emergency-in-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/florida\/2026\/06\/12\/flesh-eating-parasite-drives-state-of-emergency-in-florida\/\">Florida\u2019s New World Screwworm (NWS) emergency protections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">But Vega came back into the state anyway through Georgia to bypass the station, bringing 24 sheep and goats that originated from Texas \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Pests-and-Diseases\/Animal-Pests-and-Diseases\/New-World-Screwworm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Pests-and-Diseases\/Animal-Pests-and-Diseases\/New-World-Screwworm\">a high-risk area subject to enhanced import restrictions<\/a>, the release shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Now, Vega faces 24 counts of unlawful entry of animals into the state, and one count resisting an officer without violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cFlorida has taken a proactive and aggressive approach to protecting our livestock, agricultural industry, pets, wildlife, and food supply from the very real threat of New World Screwworm, and we will not tolerate anyone who breaks the law and attempts to circumvent those protections,\u201d Simpson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">That said, state officials assured that there haven\u2019t been any cases of NWS reported in Florida \u2014 yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">WHAT ARE NEW WORLD SCREWWORMS?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Per experts, the NWS are maggots that often enter animals through open wounds, feeding on an animal\u2019s living flesh. As a result, infestations can be fatal if not treated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 knsIYg fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Pests-and-Diseases\/Animal-Pests-and-Diseases\/New-World-Screwworm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Pests-and-Diseases\/Animal-Pests-and-Diseases\/New-World-Screwworm\">New World Screwworm<\/a> \u2014 a destructive parasite that targets warm-blooded animals \u2014 was eradicated from the U.S. more than four decades ago,&#8221; state officials announced. \u201cIts return would pose a serious threat to livestock, wildlife, and domestic animals, particularly in states like Florida with warm climates and abundant animal populations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 knsIYg fSvavs article-text\">Experts state that screwworm eggs are deposited in a \u201cshingle-like manner\u201d at the edges of superficial wounds, with larvae feeding by burrowing into the wound like a screw \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/livestock-poultry-disease\/cattle\/ticks\/screwworm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" the NWS had been present in the southwestern U.S. since at least 1842, it was first documented as a major problem in 1933 after shipments of infested animals came in from the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">At the time, the federal government and the state of Florida began developing tactics to deal with the threat, such as education programs, special insecticides, and radiation to sterilize the insects.<\/p>\n<p>450 sterile screwworm pupae in a typical paper box &#8220;bomb&#8221; to be dropped on a cattle ranch by plane in 1958 \u2014 just one of the methods to fight back against New World Screwworm infestations in Florida (Florida State Archives (Public Domain))<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">But in the meantime, producers lost out on tens of millions of dollars each year as the NWS ravaged livestock, data shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Eventually, the U.S. and Mexico worked together to push these infestations down to the southern borders of Mexico in 1986. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">[RELATED: Millions reemergence in the Florida Keys affecting the endangered Key deer back in 2016, though the outbreak was ultimately eradicated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">However, Florida officials said that infestations have been spreading north from Panama since 2023, culminating in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/news\/agency-announcements\/usda-confirms-presence-new-world-screwworm-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/news\/agency-announcements\/usda-confirms-presence-new-world-screwworm-united-states\">the discovery of NWS in a bovine in South Texas<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">WHAT ARE THE NEW EMERGENCY RULES?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">To prevent the NWS from infiltrating Florida again, Simpson\u2019s emergency rule imposes temporary restrictions on the importation of warm-blooded animals originating from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Pests-and-Diseases\/Animal-Pests-and-Diseases\/New-World-Screwworm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Pests-and-Diseases\/Animal-Pests-and-Diseases\/New-World-Screwworm\">certain high-risk and infested areas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The latest guidelines are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>HIGH-RISK AREAS<\/p>\n<p>All warm-blooded animals originating from a high-risk area and entering Florida must be accompanied by an Official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (OCVI), valid for five days from the date of inspection, documenting that all animals listed have been inspected and found free of contagious and infectious diseases and pests, including NWS.<\/p>\n<p>The OCVI must include the statement: \u201cAll animals listed on the OCVI have been inspected and are free from screwworm larvae infestation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>COUNTIES WITH CONFIRMED NWS DETECTIONS AND SURROUNDING COUNTIES<\/p>\n<p>RESCUE AND SHELTER ANIMALS<\/p>\n<p>Rescue dogs, rescue cats, shelter dogs and shelter cats originating from states with confirmed NWS detections are prohibited from entering Florida until further notice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Federal officials said that the USDA and Texas are implementing quarantines as necessary and working to release sterile NWS flies to fight potential population growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Meanwhile, signs of screwworm infestation in animals include the following symptoms:<\/p>\n<p>Wounds in living animals infested with maggots<\/p>\n<p>Blood-tinged discharge from the infested wounds<\/p>\n<p>Foul odor<\/p>\n<p>Discomfort<\/p>\n<p>Depressed\/no eating<\/p>\n<p>Decreased milk production<\/p>\n<p>Seclusion from rest of herd or flock<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0
