And as a result of his presentation, a motion was made at the meeting to recommend that the commission support a partnership between the city and Broward County School District to find a location for the public safety training facility,” Guelteri said.

The board did not identify a single site; the school district has offered the Seagull School campus at 424 SW 28th St. (adjacent to State Road 84) as a potential shared campus that would also involve Wyndham Rogers, city staff said. Commissioners and staff emphasized that no financial commitment has been made.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Chief Stephen Golan described training gaps the city faces and why a consolidated facility would be useful. “With over 470 firefighters and over 700 police officers, one of the key components that we’re missing is a facility that we’re able to do not only didactic training, but also tactile training,” Golan said. He described current makeshift arrangements including shipping-container structures at the wellfield and remote, constrained locations for vehicle and burn‑building exercises.

Police Chief Veil Shorps said the new police headquarters will include some classroom space and a firearms range, but “we still have needs for emergency vehicle driving, quick response training. We need large areas, large open fields for that.” Both chiefs said a joint facility could also host community classes and partner training such as shipboard firefighting.

Commissioners asked about size and costs. Staff said the Seagull campus contains roughly 25,000–28,000 square feet across multiple buildings, some portable; officials said they have not yet developed a cost estimate or finalized terms of a partnership. “We haven’t gotten into what the cost is gonna be or what that partnership would look like,” a city staff member said.

City Manager Raquel Williams said staff will continue conversations with the school board and return to the commission with specifics, particularly if there is a fiscal impact.

Why this matters: City and county public safety agencies report accreditation findings that note the lack of a consolidated training campus; a shared school‑district property could reduce capital cost and speed deliverability but will require detailed analysis of rehabilitation or build‑out costs and impacts on current students and neighbors.

Next steps: Staff will pursue the school‑district conversations and brief the commission with cost estimates and any required approvals before any commitment by the city.

Janet Guelteri, chair of the Fort Lauderdale Education Advisory Board, told the commission the board voted unanimously at…

[17
249,251,250
post-35153","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fort-lauderdale","tag-fort-lauderdale","tag-fort-lauderdale-headlines","tag-fort-lauderdale-news
["GET
