{"id":351704,"date":"2026-07-24T23:15:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T23:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/351704\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T23:15:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T23:15:10","slug":"charlie-crist-buries-ken-welch-in-latest-fundraising-grows-cash-advantage-to-more-than-700k","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/351704\/","title":{"rendered":"Charlie Crist buries Ken Welch in latest fundraising, grows cash advantage to more than $700K"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Charlie Crist raised six times what incumbent Mayor Ken Welch brought in during the most recent fundraising period for the St. Petersburg mayoral election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the period covering July 11-17, Crist raised $76,100 to his <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=89558\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">St. Pete Shines<\/a> political committee. Welch, meanwhile, raised just $12,500 to his affiliated political committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=89771\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">St. Petersburg Progress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Making the gap more stark, $10,000 of Welch\u2019s committee haul came from Tampa Bay Entertainment Properties, which gave the same amount to Crist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">And Crist continues to grow his cash on hand advantage over Welch. Crist\u2019s total fundraising to date for his political committee has now reached nearly $1.7 million, with more than $878,000 left on hand. Welch has raised just $354,060 to his committee, and retains just $149,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Crist\u2019s largest contribution came from the Floridians for a Better Florida political committee, with a $25,000 check that brings the PC\u2019s total contributions to St. Pete Shines since its inception to $55,000. Other large donations include $18,000 from Friends for a Better St. Petersburg and $10,000 from Ballard Partners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tgh.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/tgh_42212_01_PoliticsSponsor_Banner_728x90_L4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-325032\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Previous donors span the political gambit, punctuating one of Crist\u2019s campaign talking points that he will be a Mayor for all St. Pete residents. There are prominent Democrats, Republicans and independents who have contributed. On the Democratic side, big names in Florida Politics have cut checks, such as former Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, former Miami Mayor and former Florida Democratic Party Chair Manny Diaz, former state Rep. Ben Diamond, former St. Pete City Council members Karl Nurse and Jim Kennedy and former Palm Beach County State Attorney David Aronberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the Republican side, prominent donors have included former U.S. Sen. George Lemieux, former Florida Senate President John McKay, Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano, former state Rep. Frank Farkas, and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Campaign finance reports were also due Friday, but they have not yet been added to the city\u2019s database. As of July 10, Crist was leading funding there, too. As of that date, Crist had raised nearly $90,000 to his campaign, while Welch had raised just shy of $75,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The fundraising totals come the same day Crist is celebrating his birthday, and it\u2019s been a good week for the former Governor. This week he also earned <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/809330-challenging-times-gwendolyn-reese-backs-charlie-crist-for-mayor-to-restore-confidence-and-faith-in-leaders\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a key endorsement<\/a> from Gwendolyn Reese, a prominent community advocate, particularly in the city\u2019s Black community. Her endorsement builds on support Crist has been receiving from the Black community, including from state Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/806667-after-dual-endorsements-for-charlie-crist-and-ken-welch-darryl-rouson-says-hell-vote-for-crist\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Darryl Rouson<\/a> and several local faith leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/808608-poll-charlie-crist-leads-ken-welch-by-nearly-14-points-in-st-pete-mayors-race\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Polling<\/a> released this week also showed Crist growing his lead over Welch. <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/808608-poll-charlie-crist-leads-ken-welch-by-nearly-14-points-in-st-pete-mayors-race\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">A St. Pete Polls survey<\/a>\u00a0taken last week found Crist leading Welch in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup 44% to 28%, a 16-percentage-point advantage that has doubled since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/805326-poll-charlie-crist-opens-double-digit-lead-in-st-pete-mayors-race-as-support-for-ken-welch-collapses\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">previous polling<\/a>\u00a0at the end of June.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/FloodReadyFlorida.com\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-799821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Flood-Ready-Florida-728x90-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">And Crist is putting his cash advantage to use. St. Pete Shines is running <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/809112-latest-charlie-crist-ad-blasts-mess-from-current-admin-vows-to-clean-up-city-hall\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a new ad entitled \u201cMess\u201d<\/a> highlighting catastrophic damage resulting from back-to-back hurricanes in 2024 and a mayoral administration \u201cmissing in action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAfter Milton and Helene hit, St. Pete was a mess. Water mains busted, homes destroyed, and City Hall was missing in action,\u201d Crist narrates in the ad. \u201cRecovery funds got delayed. Piles of debris never collected. Construction permits unapproved, and neighborhoods left to fend for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ad ends with a positive message from Crist, who is also a former U.S. Representative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe can do better, a lot better. I know that when a hurricane hits, you don\u2019t sit at home, you act. As Mayor, I\u2019ll never abandon our city during a storm.
