ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. \u2013 As e-bikes and e-scooters become more common across Northeast Florida neighborhoods, one Atlantic Beach father says parents need more tools to help keep young riders safe.<\/p>\n

Derik Treuel, who moved to Jacksonville to attend the University of North Florida and has lived in the area since, created an app called Rygiene<\/a>. Treuel said the app is designed to help parents review how their child rode after each trip \u2014 including speed, stop sign behavior and whether the rider appeared to be using a phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think e-bikes are dangerous and us as parents who have kids, we need to take this stuff serious,\u201d Treuel told News4JAX.<\/p>\n

Treuel said the idea came from his own experience as a parent.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy son has an e-bike, and I\u2019ve always been on the fence,\u201d he said, adding that friends have been seriously injured on e-bikes. \u201cI wanted to see if there was a way that I could track his rides and find out how the rides went and I couldn\u2019t find anything out there so I started building it.\u201d<\/p>\n

How the app works<\/p>\n

Treuel said Rygiene uses the child\u2019s iPhone tracking and GPS to monitor rides on e-bikes and e-scooters. Parents can check where a rider is, and after the ride, look back at a map recap showing what happened along the route.<\/p>\n

During a demonstration, Treuel showed how parents can review previous rides and tap into a \u201creplay\u201d feature.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a map that shows exactly what happened on each ride,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is when you can talk to your child\u2026 \u2018Why were you on your cell phone right here?\u2019 Going 13 miles an hour. That\u2019s pretty dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also showed a \u201cslow zone\u201d feature, where parents can set rules around certain areas \u2014 like routes near school \u2014 and set speed limits.<\/p>\n

\u2018A good opportunity for you to ride along with them\u2019<\/p>\n

Treuel emphasized the app isn\u2019t meant to replace other safety steps, like helmets and rider education, but to help parents have better conversations with kids about real-world decision-making on the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen a kid drives his car for the first time he rides in a car with a parent for up to a year,\u201d Treuel said. \u201cWith e-bike riding you don\u2019t really have that opportunity to do that. So this is a good opportunity for you to ride along with them in a way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Treuel told News4JAX he\u2019s seen changes at home since using the app.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been night and day,\u201d he said, describing improvements in his son\u2019s riding.<\/p>\n

Where it\u2019s available<\/p>\n

Treuel said Rygiene is available in app stores<\/a> and can be used across the U.S. The app requires the child to have an iPhone because it relies on phone tracking and GPS.<\/p>\n
