It comes more than seven months after Florida Politics reported that Fishback had been registered to vote in both Florida and Washington, D.C., where he voted in 2020 and subsequently purchased a condominium on which he received a homestead exemption.<\/p>\n Case closed<\/a> \u2014 Leon Circuit Judge Joshua Hawkes has dismissed Rep. Paula Stark\u2019s lawsuit to get on the ballot<\/a> and ordered the Clerk to close the file. Hawkes denied her request to be placed back on the ballot in his order issued after a July 8 hearing. Stark was given seven days to respond to why her case should not be dismissed, but Hawkes wrote<\/a> in his final order last week that \u201cNo response was forwarded to chambers. Instead, Petitioner submitted a motion for reconsideration, which is denied by a separate order.\u201d Controversial lawyer Anthony Sabatini had been representing Stark. Without Stark, no other Republican is running for House District 47. The only other candidates are Democrats, Jorge Figueroa and Anthony Nieves, which means the Florida Democratic Party flips the seat in Osceola and Orange that had traditionally been blue before Stark\u2019s surprising win in 2022.<\/p>\n Confirmed<\/a> \u2014 The State Board of Education<\/a> unanimously voted to make U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor Henry Mack the next Florida Education Commissioner. \u201cIt is an incredible honor to be selected to serve as Florida\u2019s next Commissioner of Education,\u201d Mack said<\/a>. \u201cI am grateful to Gov. DeSantis and the State Board of Education for their confidence in me, and I look forward to working alongside educators, parents, school leaders, and communities across Florida to build on our state\u2019s success. Ron DeSantis had recommended hiring Mack<\/a> to replace previous Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas, who left to become President of Polk State College<\/a>.<\/p>\n Crumble continues<\/a> \u2014 More elected officials are rescinding their endorsements of Rep. Fabi\u00e1n Basabe in the wake of a jury verdict that found him liable for sexual harassment, battery and defamation. Sunny Isles Beach Commissioner Alex Lama, who said he was \u201cproud to endorse\u201d Basabe in a statement this past March, has changed his position following the court decision. Lama joins two fellow Republicans \u2014 Surfside Commissioner Ruben Coto and Bal Harbour Council Member Buzzy Sklar \u2014 and Kissimmee Democratic Rep. Jose Alvarez in canceling their endorsements of Basabe, who was ordered<\/a> last week to pay $450,000 to former aide Nicolas Frevola and former intern Jacob Cutbirth. A separate suit the plaintiffs brought against the House, which they accuse of insufficiently investigating their claims against Basabe, remains pending. The two 2023 investigations by the House \u2014 one into the face-slapping incident, the other into the accusations of sexual impropriety \u2014 resulted in an \u201cinconclusive\u201d finding and \u201cno evidence\u201d of wrongdoing, respectively.<\/p>\n Aggrieved alums<\/a> \u2014 The New College Foundation<\/a> Governance Committee has unanimously recommended amending its governing documents to replace the existing Alumni Committee<\/a> with an Alumni Engagement Committee, according to information provided to Florida Politics. The Foundation Board is expected to consider the proposal July 29. \u201cThe change reflects a broader mission, one that emphasizes meaningful alumni participation, lifelong learning, student engagement, philanthropy, and community building, while strengthening coordination between alumni leaders and Foundation staff in support of the College\u2019s mission,\u201d New College spokesperson Jamie Miller<\/a> said. Vice President of Advancement David Rancourt<\/a> elaborated on that vision, describing the proposal to create a broader and more coordinated alumni engagement program. Current Alumni Association leadership contends the changes would reduce the alumni organization\u2019s independence and limit its ability to criticize the Foundation, trustees or college administration. Association Chair Chris Van Dyk told Florida Politics that the Alumni Association met Wednesday and unanimously voted to oppose the proposal, with all eight Board members in attendance supporting the motion.<\/p>\n \u2014 Are you going to Farnborough fair? \u2014<\/p>\n This week across the pond in the United Kingdom, Florida\u2019s Business Development Leadership Mission kicked off, and to celebrate the opening day of events focused on business opportunities in the Sunshine State, DeSantis officially opened the Florida Pavilion at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow.<\/p>\n During the festivities, DeSantis announced that Relativity Space \u2014 an aerospace manufacturing company founded in 2015 and headquartered in Long Beach, California \u2014 has committed to expanding its operations to the Space Coast, helping bring additional capital investment and high-skill, high-wage jobs to the area.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Free State of Florida anchors the international space economy. Today\u2019s announcements at the Farnborough International Airshow reinforce our position as a leader in the international space race by creating pathways for innovation, investment, and opportunity,\u201d the Governor said.<\/p>\n During the event, DeSantis also presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Space Florida and the U.K. Space Agency (UKSA), a new partnership to build on the strong relationship between the U.K. and Florida and advance international space collaboration.<\/p>\n \u201cRelativity Space\u2019s decision to expand their pioneering manufacturing and launch operations to the Space Coast supports Florida\u2019s position as the premier destination for innovative companies,\u201d added Commerce Secretary J. We look forward to actively helping them grow in our state.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2014 Ice Breaker II \u2014<\/p>\n Attorney General James Uthmeier says a multiagency investigation ended with 49 arrests in a suspected drug trafficking ring along Florida\u2019s east coast.<\/p>\n The suspects are charged with running a drug distribution network in Flagler, Volusia, St. Johns, Marion and Orange counties. Uthmeier said the suspects are accused of selling cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl and marijuana. The investigation dates to 2024.<\/p>\n \u201cThis joint investigation dismantled a criminal organization that pumped deadly fentanyl and other dangerous drugs into Florida communities,\u201d Uthmeier said.<\/p>\n \u201cThrough the tireless work of Florida\u2019s law enforcement, state attorneys, and our statewide prosecutors, we have arrested 49 traffickers and disrupted these networks. Florida families deserve safe streets free of dangerous drugs, and we will continue holding every member of this organization fully accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n The investigation began with the Daytona Beach Police Department\u2019s Special Investigations Unit two years ago. Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said the initial probe was called Operation Ice Breaker before later expanding into Operation Ice Breaker II.<\/p>\n \u201cOperation Ice Breaker II is a testament to the relentless work of our detectives and the strength of our partnerships,\u201d Young said. \u201cBy dismantling this organization, we have made Daytona Beach a safer place and sent a clear message that those who choose to traffic illegal narcotics here will be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n The multiagency investigation culminated June 30, with search warrants executed at several locations. Three suspects are believed to be the ringleaders: Vetrick Maurice Shavers Jr., Richard Gene Hocker III and Antonio Bejon Lee. They are all facing charges of trafficking in fentanyl and conspiracy to traffic the drug, along with other charges.<\/p>\n \u2014 Helping hand \u2014<\/p>\n CFO Blaise Ingoglia presented reimbursement checks for the second consecutive day this week to Florida law enforcement agencies that have assisted with immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n Ingoglia was in Southwest Florida to distribute checks totaling $8.78 million to two Sheriff\u2019s Offices and two Police Departments. The Collier and Hendry County Sheriff\u2019s Offices were reimbursed for their efforts to stem illegal immigration, along with the Naples and Arcadia Police Departments.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s only right if we ask you to do more work that we have the funding there,\u201d Ingoglia said during a check presentation ceremony in Naples. \u201cWe\u2019re reimbursing you for training and when we\u2019re taking you away from normal duties.\u201d<\/p>\n The funding comes from the State Board of Immigration Enforcement.<\/p>\n The Collier County Sheriff\u2019s Office received the largest share, totaling $8.25 million. The Arcadia Police Department received $377,185, while the Hendry County Sheriff\u2019s Office was reimbursed $85,067 and the Naples Police Department received $74,326.<\/p>\n Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said the state\u2019s funding is valued by local law enforcement.<\/p>\n \u201cIt goes way beyond one element of public safety,\u201d Rambosk said. \u201cThe funding we have received today is going to help strengthen the collaboration between all of our law enforcement partners to carry out our mission.\u201d<\/p>\n Collier County partners with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to house undocumented immigrants in the county jail. Rambosk said that includes housing more detainees at the facility.<\/p>\n The state funding will be used to upgrade technology and communications systems at the jail, he added.<\/p>\n \u2014 Helping hand, part deux \u2014<\/p>\n Ingoglia also swung through Central Florida to deliver $24.25 million to six law enforcement agencies for their work on immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n Ingoglia announced during a news conference at the Lake County Sheriff\u2019s Office headquarters that the funding comes from the State Board of Immigration Enforcement. The money was distributed to the Sheriff\u2019s Offices in Lake, Osceola, Orange and Sumter counties, along with the Clermont and St. Cloud Police Departments.<\/p>\n \u201cFlorida will continue to lead on protecting our citizens. Florida will continue to lead on law enforcement,\u201d Ingoglia said during a check presentation ceremony. \u201cFlorida doesn\u2019t shy away from problems; we solve them.\u201d<\/p>\n The Osceola County Sheriff\u2019s Office received the largest reimbursement \u2014 $11.44 million \u2014 along with a separate check for $223,878. The Orange County Sheriff\u2019s Office received $10.8 million, while the Lake County Sheriff\u2019s Office was reimbursed $1.24 million and the Sumter County Sheriff\u2019s Office received $531,678.<\/p>\n The St. Cloud Police Department received $38,000, while the Clermont Police Department was reimbursed $16,471.<\/p>\n Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon said immigration enforcement is a bigger part of local law enforcement than many residents realize. He said the reimbursements go directly toward equipment and other costs incurred by his agency.<\/p>\n \u201cThis stuff is important to our taxpayers and our agency,\u201d Blackmon said. \u201cWe use this money for body armor. Every deputy has brand-new body armor.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2014 Year One done \u2014<\/p>\n Time sure flies.<\/p>\n Last week, Ingoglia took to the road to highlight the financial accomplishments he and his office have achieved during his first year, including putting money back into taxpayers\u2019 pockets and exposing excessive local government spending.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I became CFO, I promised to be an outspoken advocate for the taxpayers, and we\u2019ve delivered. In this past year, we have redefined the role of the office, strengthened government accountability, called out wasteful local government spending that has caused property taxes to skyrocket, and delivered results for Floridians. Our work is far from over, and my office will continue to keep our foot on the gas when it comes to advancing Florida\u2019s fiscal future,\u201d Ingoglia said.<\/p>\n The CFO has also focused on passing legislation to protect Floridians from overstuffed budgets while looking to the future by establishing the Florida Stablecoin Pilot Program.<\/p>\n \u201cCFO Ingoglia has always been committed to his role as a fiscal watchdog for Floridians. Whether it\u2019s ensuring that local governments remain fiscally responsible or providing meaningful financial relief to residents across the state, he remains steadfast in safeguarding taxpayer dollars,\u201d added Logan Bragdon, Coalitions Manager at the James Madison Institute.<\/p>\n Through the CFO\u2019s Florida Agency for Fiscal Oversight (FAFO), the office has identified $3.7 billion in what it considers wasteful taxpayer spending. Meanwhile, the Department of Financial Services\u2019 Division of Unclaimed Property has returned more than $847 million to Floridians and their families.<\/p>\n \u201cFiscal restraint is a choice. I applaud CFO Ingoglia for his accomplishments over his first year in office and for shining a light on out-of-control government spending. Serving as a taxpayer advocate is a role he\u2019s taken seriously, and I thank him for it,\u201d said former Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry.<\/p>\n \u2014 Instagram of the week \u2014<\/p>\n \u2014 Claims down \u2014<\/p>\n Property insurance lawsuits in Florida dropped dramatically last year, reaching their lowest level in the past decade.<\/p>\n The Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) published its semiannual Property Insurance Stability Report showing the number of property insurance claims in the state fell sharply in 2025. Only 4.85% of homeowner property insurance claims nationwide last year originated in Florida.<\/p>\n That\u2019s the lowest figure for Florida in the past 10 years. It\u2019s also a sharp decline from 2024, when the Sunshine State accounted for 12.33% of national claims.<\/p>\n Florida still accounted for a significant share of homeowner lawsuits over insurance claims, making up 41.29% of those court challenges last year. But that\u2019s down from 73.15% in 2024, and the 2025 figure is Florida\u2019s lowest share in a decade.<\/p>\n OIR officials credited Florida\u2019s legislative action to reduce litigation surrounding insurance claims for the decline in both claims and lawsuits. State lawmakers approved insurance tort reform measures in 2023 and changed regulations governing property damage insurance claims and related lawsuits.<\/p>\n Since DeSantis signed the legislation, 44 insurance companies have requested rate decreases in Florida.<\/p>\n The peak for homeowner property insurance claims came in 2017, when Florida accounted for 16.47% of such claims nationwide. That same year, Florida accounted for 68.07% of homeowner insurance lawsuits across the country.<\/p>\n \u2014 Space talk \u2014<\/p>\n Look no further than the stars.<\/p>\n This week in Washington, D.C., Florida House on Capitol Hill hosted \u201cReturn to the Moon: Florida\u2019s Role in the Moon Landing, Artemis Generation, and Beyond,\u201d a policy discussion featuring Kennedy Space Center Director Brian Hughes, who examined NASA\u2019s Artemis program and the continued growth of the commercial space sector.<\/p>\n \u201cPrograms like \u2018Return to the Moon\u2019 are exactly why Florida House exists: to put Florida\u2019s story, and Florida\u2019s leadership, in front of the people who set national policy,\u201d said Rick Derrer, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Florida House on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n \u201cThroughout this year, from our Legacy of Launch exhibit to tonight\u2019s discussion, we\u2019ve made it a priority to connect Florida\u2019s space heritage to the future of American space enterprise. Sean Graham, Executive Advisor to the U.S. Space Force Historical Foundation, moderated it.<\/p>\n \u201cConversations about the future of space are most valuable when they connect policy, technology and the people responsible for turning ambitious goals into reality,\u201d Graham said.<\/p>\n \u201cFlorida House created an optimal space to bring those perspectives together and examine how collaboration across government and industry can help sustain America\u2019s leadership in space, from Artemis to the commercial missions and capabilities that will define what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n Watch the full hourlong discussion here<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u2014 Program for parents \u2014<\/p>\n On Monday, FloridaCommerce announced that it has made $7.55 million in funding available to eligible organizations through the Non-Custodial Parent Employment Program (NCPEP).<\/p>\n Eligible organizations may receive funding to provide services to non-custodial parents that create pathways to greater self-sufficiency through employment and training opportunities.<\/p>\n The application deadline is Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. EDT. Eligible organizations include governmental and quasi-governmental entities, nonprofit corporations, tribal governments and Local Workforce Development Boards.<\/p>\n NCPEP funding is intended to support services for unemployed or underemployed non-custodial parents who are struggling to make ends meet, helping promote family stability.<\/p>\n To successfully implement the program, participating organizations should provide training and resources for non-custodial parents, hands-on assistance with job searches, r\u00e9sum\u00e9 building, parenting skills, financial literacy and other services deemed essential. Organizations are also expected to report on the program\u2019s outputs, outcomes and lessons learned to help improve future efforts.<\/p>\n The NCPEP was established in 2022 and operates pursuant to Sec. 409.25996, Florida Statutes, to help unemployed or underemployed non-custodial parents make regular child support payments by assisting them in obtaining and maintaining employment.<\/p>\n For more information about the NCPEP or to apply, visit the Non-Custodial Parent Employment Program webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u2014 Read my lips \u2014<\/p>\n School is just around the corner (same with the NFL and college football!), and parents are excited to get the little worms out of their hair. That also means the tax holiday is back.<\/p>\n The Florida Department of Revenue is encouraging Floridians to get their shopping done during the annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, which runs from Monday through Aug. 20, giving families plenty of time to save on essential school supplies and more.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday eases some of the financial burden of preparing students to start the 2026-27 school year. With qualifying school supplies, clothing, and computers exempt from sales tax, students from pre-kindergarten to college can benefit,\u201d said Department of Revenue Executive Director Jim Zingale.<\/p>\n DeSantis signed this year\u2019s tax relief package, which provides more than $122 million in estimated savings for Floridians and expanded the annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday to run from July 20 through Aug. 20, giving families a full month to complete their shopping.<\/p>\n The Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday includes exemptions for school supplies selling for $50 or less, including binders, notebooks, pens and pencils, and lunch boxes; clothing, footwear and apparel priced at $100 or less, including backpacks, pants, shoes, shirts and hoodies; learning aids priced at $30 or less, including interactive books, puzzles, flashcards and memory cards; and personal computers and accessories priced at $1,500 or less, including laptops, flash drives, printers and headphones.<\/p>\n Find more information about qualifying items here<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u2014 You\u2019ve got mail \u2014<\/p>\n You\u2019ve probably heard people joke about messing with someone\u2019s mail, but the Florida Department of Law Enforcement isn\u2019t laughing.<\/p>\n Recently, the FDLE arrested Napeaches Blair, 43, of Tallahassee on one count of grand theft, a third-degree felony, and one count of mail theft, a first-degree misdemeanor. Blair is a United States Postal Service (USPS) Sales and Service Clerk working at a Tallahassee branch.<\/p>\n The investigation began in April 2026 after the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (OIG) provided the FDLE Tallahassee Economic Crime Squad with information about a mail theft case. FDLE then launched its own investigation, which ultimately led to Blair\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n The OIG\u2019s investigation showed that Blair, while working at the counter of a Tallahassee Post Office, stole cash and gift cards from the U.S. mail system.<\/p>\n \u201cWhether it is connecting with loved ones who are far away or ensuring important and sensitive information is transported safely, the postal system is a crucial component of our lives. Manipulating the U.S. Mailing System will never be tolerated in Florida, and FDLE will investigate any crimes that affect that system,\u201d said FDLE Tallahassee Special Agent in Charge Keith Wilmer.<\/p>\n An FDLE special agent working undercover attempted to mail a card containing $1,000 in cash. The operation confirmed that Blair had removed the money from the card.<\/p>\n On July 13, Blair was arrested and transported to the Leon County Jail.<\/p>\n The arrest was made possible with assistance from the U.S. Postal Service OIG. The Office of the State Attorney for the Second Judicial Circuit is prosecuting the case.<\/p>\n The investigation remains active.<\/p>\n \u2014 Speed barricade \u2014<\/p>\n FHP to the rescue.<\/p>\n The Florida Highway Patrol announced this week that State Troopers in Fort Myers received a \u201cBe on the Lookout\u201d alert around 12:30 p.m. Thursday from the FHP Regional Communications Center regarding a suspect believed to be suicidal and involved in a homicide in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n Troopers located the suspect in Lee County and attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect fled.<\/p>\n A Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver was successfully executed near southbound Exit 128 at Alico Road on Interstate 75, but the suspect refused to comply with lawful commands and barricaded himself inside the vehicle.<\/p>\n Lee County Sheriff\u2019s deputies and State Troopers eventually established contact with the suspect and took him into custody.<\/p>\n \u201cState Troopers and law enforcement officers put themselves in harm\u2019s way every day to protect the people of this great state. As this is an active criminal investigation, we will have no further comment, except to say how thankful I am for the heroism State Troopers display each and every day, including this very challenging and dangerous incident today,\u201d said Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Dave Kerner.<\/p>\n \u201cThe entire Florida Highway Patrol is deeply thankful for the heroism and support Lee County Deputies provided in responding, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident, and the suspect was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is on the scene and will investigate the use of force.<\/p>\n \u2014 A bug\u2019s crime \u2014<\/p>\n Florida A&M University\u2019s College of Agriculture and Food Sciences is looking to the dirt to help solve crimes, and it\u2019s working.<\/p>\n Researchers at the college are studying how different insects colonize decomposing remains, helping forensic investigators estimate time of death and strengthen criminal investigations across the state. Forensic entomology, the study of insects as they relate to criminal investigations, is changing how investigators approach a scene.<\/p>\n By identifying the insects present and understanding when they arrive and their life cycles, scientists can provide critical information that supports death investigations and helps law enforcement establish a timeline of events.<\/p>\n The research is being led by Lee Bushong, Associate Professor of Forensics and Criminal Justice at FAMU, and Anamika Sharma, Assistant Professor of Entomology at FAMU. The work could be game-changing because little forensic entomology data exists for North Florida. Every bit helps.<\/p>\n \u201cIn North Florida, we do not have a lot of data historically available, so any data that we collect here is going to help our law enforcement and police departments,\u201d said Bushong.<\/p>\n Just as Florida\u2019s weather can be brutal for the living, it also accelerates what happens after death.<\/p>\n \u201cFlorida\u2019s climate is very warm and humid, and insects love this kind of environment, so anything that is decomposing in this climate will decompose much faster. Florida\u2019s warm temperatures, high humidity and diverse insect populations create decomposition patterns that differ from other regions of the country,\u201d Sharma said.<\/p>\n The work also has broader forensic applications, including helping investigators determine whether a body was moved across state lines.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are right now collecting the different species of flies in Florida, so if somebody were to move a dead body from another state and it had a specific species on it, we would be able to tell that the body has been moved,\u201d Sharma added.<\/p>\n As the research continues, the team hopes its work will strengthen forensic databases and advance the scientific tools available to investigators.<\/p>\n \u201cThe findings can improve the accuracy of death investigations, helping investigators provide more reliable information to families and the justice system,\u201d said Maya Mancle, a researcher who recently earned her master\u2019s degree in entomology with a concentration in forensic entomology.<\/p>\n \u2014 Powering up Noles \u2014<\/p>\n This week, it was announced that Florida State University will lead four major projects as part of the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s highly coveted Genesis Mission, reaffirming the university\u2019s strengths in advanced technological innovation.<\/p>\n FSU\u2019s world-class faculty will guide the projects and will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to tackle some of the nation\u2019s most complex challenges, from high-temperature superconductors for fusion energy to nuclear reaction modeling.<\/p>\n \u201cThese awards further affirm Florida State University\u2019s emergence as a national leader at the frontiers of discovery, innovation and national service. No family gets to court without that history of trauma. And if we fail to recognize and address that trauma, we are \u2018rearranging the deck chairs.\u2019 If we recognize that trauma and can learn what science has to teach us, we can intervene more effectively,\u201d added former Chief Judge Jonathan Sjostrom of Florida\u2019s 2nd Judicial Circuit.<\/p>\n The training is not limited to Florida. CPEIP is offering it nationwide to help strengthen the judiciary by equipping judges and court professionals with practical tools grounded in science.
