<\/p>\nNylah Norris followed her older brother to the pitch even before she turned 3.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As the second of six kids, the Dallas native always looked up to her brother Nolan Norris. When he started playing soccer, Nylah was right on his heels.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The siblings\u2019 close relationship extended past the field. They were homeschooled throughout their childhood, which allowed them to train together easily.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI would play the positions he was playing,\u201d Nylah said. \u201cI think having him pushed me a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both parents were Nylah\u2019s recreational soccer coaches until she was about 7 or 8. Then, she moved on to play for Tristan Abbott and current East Texas A&M head coach Ashley Gordon.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey kind of helped drive me, pushing me to older age groups, pushing me to play with boys, pushing me into different areas that were uncomfortable at first that helped me grow in so many ways,\u201d Nylah said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Before Nylah and her four younger siblings moved to Florida, all six Norris children played in the FC Dallas youth system.<\/p>\n
Nolan, who advanced from the academy to the club\u2019s MLS team, said his younger sister distinguished herself through her work ethic.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cShe just has a will and a desire to outwork those around her,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cShe has a passion for the game that\u2019s a little bit different.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nylah\u2019s competitive mindset helped shape her path to the University of Florida, where she enters her freshman year under first-year head coach Nick Zimmerman.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The connection between the two stems back to Zimmerman\u2019s days as Mississippi State head coach. He recruited Nylah and planned to host her for a visit. However, she decided to commit to the Gators to be closer to her family, who had recently moved from Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Little did she know, Zimmerman would be back on her case a year later.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI was very excited,\u201d Nylah said. \u201cEvery single coach I knew had nothing but great things to say about Nick.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The former New York Red Bulls midfielder believes Nylah\u2019s versatility makes her well suited for his playing style. She has experience trying out different positions and hasn\u2019t been assigned one just yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Zimmerman brought a new philosophy to the table: offense first. He wants the Gators to control possession, attack with purpose and employ controlled aggression.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Rhode Island native envisions a squad that creates chances and scores goals in different ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But that requires the ability to turn control into meaningful opportunities.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to dominate the ball,\u201d Zimmerman said. \u201cWe want to be purposeful in possession, not just have it to have it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Several other players who committed to or played for Mississippi State followed Zimmerman to Gainesville, creating the obstacle of balancing coaching familiar faces and returning Gators.<\/p>\n
That led Zimmerman to focus on building rapport during spring training.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we left the spring, the two things we talked about were trust and identity,\u201d Zimmerman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He wanted the team to develop transformational relationships, so they could compete and accept challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe care so much about each and every one of these young players, and we\u2019re going to challenge them,\u201d Zimmerman said. \u201cWe\u2019d be doing them a disservice if we didn\u2019t challenge them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those connections are important as he takes over the only SEC team to win a women\u2019s soccer national championship.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Zimmerman recognizes the high expectations surrounding UF and is embracing the pressure. He credited the athletic department at Florida for setting those standards.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone\u2019s willing to help each other, and that is rare at an institution as elite as this,\u201d Zimmerman said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The women\u2019s soccer team will need that attitude as the SEC continues to become one of the most ambitious conferences in the country, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Zimmerman believes the league\u2019s continued growth has led to a greater investment and increased competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery single week you have to bring not only your intentionality with how you prepare, but you\u2019ve also got to be ready to play because there’s no easy games, there\u2019s no easy place to play and every game matters,\u201d Zimmerman said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
For Nylah, playing in that environment will require her to learn from experienced teammates. She credited senior Mississippi State transfer Hannah Jibril and senior goalkeeper Paris Bice for inspiring her.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re going to be the most competitive people on the field, but they\u2019re also going to be the first people to make sure you\u2019re okay,\u201d Nylah said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The 18-year-old will put her lessons to the test on Aug. 5, when the Gators host the University of Miami in their first exhibition game.\u00a0<\/p>\n
