Broward County, FL – Broward County Public Schools is equipping every school bus with AI-powered cameras as part of a new initiative aimed at reducing illegal passing violations and improving student safety.<\/p>\n
The district announced that all 1,300 school buses will receive camera systems before students return for the 2026-27 school year. <\/p>\n
Officials said the technology is designed to capture drivers who fail to stop when a school bus has its stop arm extended and warning lights activated, which is a violation of Florida law.<\/p>\n
A 30-day warning period will begin on August 10th, the first day of school. <\/p>\n
During that time, motorists caught violating the law will receive warnings instead of citations. <\/p>\n
Beginning September 9th, drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus could receive a $225 civil citation.<\/p>\n
District officials said every potential violation recorded by the cameras will be reviewed by Broward County School Police before a citation is issued.<\/p>\n
The camera system includes at least eight cameras on each bus, including AI technology that monitors surrounding traffic and license plate recognition cameras capable of identifying vehicles involved in violations.<\/p>\n
School leaders said the program is intended to encourage drivers to follow traffic laws and help protect students as they board and exit buses.<\/p>\n
According to the district, school bus drivers reported 1,244 illegal passing incidents during the 2025-26 school year across district-operated buses, charter schools and contracted transportation providers.<\/p>\n
Officials said the camera equipment is being installed through a partnership with BusPatrol, which is covering the cost of the system.<\/p>\n
Revenue generated from citations will fund the program, with a portion also supporting student safety initiatives throughout the district.<\/p>\n
