{"id":352774,"date":"2026-07-26T08:26:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T08:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/352774\/"},"modified":"2026-07-26T08:26:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-26T08:26:09","slug":"hamburger-marys-closes-permanently-in-murray-hill-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/352774\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamburger Mary&#8217;s closes permanently in Murray Hill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The drag-themed restaurant Hamburger Mary&#8217;s has permanently closed its Murray Hill location after 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Eighteen months after making its return, Hamburger Mary\u2019s has closed in Jacksonville&#8217;s Murray Hill community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A \u201cFor Lease\u201d sign was spotted on the door of the drag-themed restaurant and bar at 947 Edgewood Ave. S., located near the historic Murray Hill Theatre, on Thursday, July 23. Earlier in the week, a handwritten sign announcing the restaurant\u2019s permanent closure was posted on the door, Jacksonville Today reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                                            &#13;<br \/>\n                                                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstcoastnews.com\/assets\/shared-images\/icons\/arrow-circle-down.svg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>                                            &#13;<br \/>\n                                                This story continues below.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Known for its weekly Dirty Bingo, Queen of the Night Maryoke, Waffles N Wigs brunch and drag shows, the entertainment venue opened in February 2025 under new owner Jordyn Shepherd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd, a performer who worked at Jacksonville\u2019s original Hamburger Mary\u2019s, told the Florida Times-Union in November 2024 that she \u201csold my house to make this work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not in it for the money,\u201d she said at the time. \u201cWhen I first stepped foot in Mary\u2019s, it was the only thing that made me happy for a long time. I want to offer that safe space for anyone who might feel the same way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Facing eviction proceedings earlier this year, Shepherd reached out to Hamburger Mary\u2019s supporters and the community to help keep the doors open. And they delivered, donating thousands of dollars to pay back rent within hours of a deadline set by the restaurant\u2019s landlord, according to a series of social media posts by Shepherd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In June, the landlord filed a complaint for commercial eviction with the Clerk of the Civil Court in Duval County for failing to pay rent in May and June, according to court records. After a judge ordered a final judgment of eviction on July 13, a motion to vacate the order was filed and is set to be heard on Aug. 6.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, before the judge\u2019s order, Shepherd reached out again on social media to find a way to keep Hamburger Mary\u2019s doors open.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On July 5, Shepherd asked for financial support via the GoFundMe crowdfunding platform, seeking $7,000 in donations to keep the restaurant and bar open and writing: \u201cIf I gave up today, our employees would lose their jobs without warning, our entertainers would lose their stage, and our community would lose a place that has meant so much to so many people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd also sought out a new business partner, writing in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HamburgerMarysJax\/posts\/pfbid0xo3i7mFvDuvFg8NRdgqFu2nE2Jv1wsjEwYvSuKzi12RTYMSTvov4jGxBQGB7PB5gl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">July 7 Facebook post<\/a>: \u201cOne thing I\u2019ve learned over the last year is that asking for help isn\u2019t failure \u2014 it\u2019s leadership. I\u2019ve poured everything I had into opening this restaurant. Financially, emotionally, and physically, it\u2019s been the biggest challenge of my life. While I\u2019m incredibly proud of what we\u2019ve created, I\u2019ve also realized that taking it where it deserves to go may require someone with a different level of restaurant operations experience alongside me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nHamburger Mary&#8217;s first opened in Jacksonville in 2012                    <\/p>\n<p>The establishment first came to Jacksonville in 2012 when owner Gary Motes opened Hamburger Mary\u2019s Bar &amp; Grille at 3333 Beach Blvd. A second location, known as Mary\u2019s Pub House, opened at 901 King St. in 2017 but closed a year later after \u201ca lack of support in the area,\u201d Motes told the Jacksonville Business Journal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After an October 2023 fire led to the closing of Motes\u2019 original Beach Boulevard Hamburger Mary&#8217;s, Shepherd brought the concept to Murray Hill, dubbing the restaurant and bar Hamburger Mary\u2019s 2.0.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonville.com\/story\/entertainment\/dining\/2026\/07\/24\/hamburger-marys-murray-hill-permanently-closed\/91039901007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">This story was originally reported by our news partners at the Florida Times-Union.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The drag-themed restaurant Hamburger Mary&#8217;s has permanently closed its Murray Hill location after 18 months.
