She sent $4,524.13 from her personal account through Cash App first. And then, they asked for something bigger.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;They told me I had to take out all the money that I had in my business account, and that&#8217;s around $45,000, so I did,&#8221; Ponce said. That withdrawal came to $45,803. The two transfers together were more than $50,000.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The scammers pushed for one more \u2014 a $25,000 wire \u2014 before backing off and sending her an email stamped with the Chase logo to cancel the request.  <\/p>\n<p>        How common this scam has become          <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Imposter scams were the most commonly reported fraud in the U.S. in 2025 \u2014 nearly one in three fraud reports \u2014 and people reported losing $3.5 billion to them, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2026\/06\/ftc-data-show-people-reported-losing-3-point-5-billion-imposter-scams-2025\" data-ylk=\"slk:Federal%20Trade%20Commission%20(FTC);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Federal Trade Commission (FTC)&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> Federal Trade Commission (FTC)<\/a>. These scams tend to start with an alarming message about your account, then steer you into moving your savings somewhere you&#8217;re told is safe.  <\/p>\n<p>    Story Continues  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">That&#8217;s what makes it work. The victim believes she&#8217;s protecting her money at the very moment she&#8217;s losing it.  <\/p>\n<p>          Why the money is so hard to get back         <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The money is hard to get back because Ponce moved it herself. Scammers can make your caller ID show your bank&#8217;s real name and number. Don&#8217;t trust the call you received \u2014 end it, then dial the number printed on the back of your card to reach the real bank.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Once you send it, it&#8217;s gone.
