Baker Mayfield enters the 2026 NFL <\/a>season facing one of the biggest moments of his career.<\/p>\n

While much of the conversation has centered on whether the Tampa Bay Buccaneers<\/a> will offer their starting quarterback a lucrative long-term extension, another possibility has quietly emerged: the franchise tag.<\/p>\n

According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, that scenario is very much on the table if the two sides fail to reach an agreement before Mayfield’s current deal expires.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile Mayfield would prefer a long-term deal, he\u2019s not afraid of the franchise tag, which would cost Tampa Bay at least $47M in 2027,\u201d Fowler wrote on his official X account.<\/p>\n

The franchise tag has rarely been discussed in relation to Mayfield’s future, but it could give Tampa Bay another year to evaluate its quarterback while preventing him from reaching unrestricted free agency.<\/p>\n

It would also guarantee the veteran signal-caller one of the largest single-season salaries in the NFL.<\/p>\n

Mayfield, however, has already shown he is willing to bet on himself.<\/p>\n

After revitalizing his career in Tampa Bay following difficult spells with the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams, he signed a three-year, $100 million contract before the 2024 season.<\/p>\n

That agreement has since been reworked, with Mayfield scheduled to earn $40 million during the 2026 campaign.<\/p>\n

Some around the league believe financial security may not be the driving force behind his next decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cBaker has made $131.8 million already in his career & he\u2019ll make $40 million this season,\u201d Damage Inc. wrote on X on Sunday. \u201cGetting tagged at $47 million at age 32 won\u2019t faze him at all. I\u2019m sure he would like another nine-digit contract, but he\u2019s going to make over $200 million in his career regardless.\u201d<\/p>\n

Contract talks remain unresolved despite Mayfield’s commitment<\/p>\n

Although speculation continues about his future, Mayfield has made it clear that he wants to remain in Tampa Bay.<\/p>\n

Speaking during his annual football camp earlier this summer, the quarterback acknowledged that negotiations had not progressed as he had hoped.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Contract extension talks) not anywhere close to what we were thinking,\u201d Mayfield told Tampa Bay Times reporter Rick Stroud.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould love to be here long term, but as of right now that\u2019s not exactly the case. But I\u2019m under contract for 2026. The guys in that locker room, the staff know that I\u2019m still gonna be me. I\u2019m still going to do everything I can to help this team win a Super Bowl. To me, that\u2019s the priority. Everything else will take care of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

That approach has become a defining characteristic of Mayfield’s resurgence in Tampa. After arriving on a modest one-year, $3 million contract following Tom Brady’s retirement, he exceeded expectations by helping stabilize the franchise and earning a much larger deal.<\/p>\n

Still, the 2025 season left questions.<\/p>\n

The Buccaneers opened the year looking like one of the NFC’s strongest teams, but injuries and inconsistency contributed to an 8-9 finish, ending the club’s playoff streak.<\/p>\n

Mayfield’s individual performances remained solid, but he fell out of ESPN’s annual top-10 quarterback rankings after previously earning Pro Bowl selections in each of his first two seasons with Tampa Bay.<\/p>\n

Despite that, league executives continue to hold him in high regard.<\/p>\n

\u201cMayfield is a winner,\u201d one anonymous NFL coordinator told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. \u201cHe can make every throw. Fearless. Teammates seem to love to play for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

That reputation could become important if negotiations drag into next offseason.<\/p>\n

From Tampa Bay’s perspective, the franchise tag would preserve flexibility while avoiding the risk of losing its starting quarterback without compensation.<\/p>\n

It would also allow another season to determine whether Mayfield can lead the Buccaneers back into playoff contention before committing to another long-term contract worth well into nine figures.<\/p>\n

For Mayfield, meanwhile, the equation appears relatively simple. He has repeatedly emphasized winning over contract discussions, but if an extension cannot be reached, a fully guaranteed franchise-tag salary of at least $47 million would provide another opportunity to prove his value while setting himself up for what could be the biggest contract of his NFL career.<\/p>\n
