ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Maria F. Vazquez announced Monday she will retire at the end of the 2026\u20132027 school year, closing a 35-year career in education that took her from a classroom teacher to the leader of one of the largest school districts in the country.<\/p>\n
Vazquez shared the news in a letter to OCPS families, saying the decision came after months of reflection and conversations with her family.<\/p>\n
\u201cServing this community has been one of the greatest honors of my life,\u201d Vazquez wrote. \u201cI remain fully committed to leading this district with the same energy, passion, and purpose that have guided me throughout my career.\u201d<\/p>\n
A career built inside OCPS<\/p>\n
Vazquez started her career as an elementary school classroom teacher and reading resource teacher before rising through the ranks at OCPS as an assistant principal, principal, area superintendent, and chief academic officer. She was promoted to deputy superintendent in 2018 and appointed as superintendent in September 2022 \u2014 becoming the district\u2019s first Hispanic superintendent.<\/p>\n
She leads OCPS, the 8th largest school district in the country, which serves more than 200,000 students.<\/p>\n
Under her leadership, the district earned an \u201cA\u201d grade from the Florida Department of Education for the 2023\u201324 school year.<\/p>\n
\u2018It\u2019s about people\u2019<\/p>\n
In her retirement letter, Vazquez reflected on what she is most proud of \u2014 pointing not to programs or data, but to the people around her.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think about the students whose curiosity, resilience, and optimism reminded me every day why this work matters,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI think about teachers who stayed long after the final bell because they believed one more conversation could change the trajectory of a child\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also credited bus drivers, cafeteria teams, custodians, administrative assistants, and maintenance crews \u2014 the workers she said make an extraordinary difference in students\u2019 lives, often without recognition.<\/p>\n
A district under financial strain<\/p>\n
Vazquez\u2019s retirement comes as OCPS grapples with a significant and accelerating enrollment crisis \u2014 one that has forced painful staffing and budget decisions throughout her tenure.<\/p>\n
In fall 2025, OCPS enrollment fell by more than 6,600 students \u2014 more than double the 3,000-student drop the district had projected. Vazquez said at the time that roughly 2,500 of those missing students were immigrants. The shortfall triggered a state funding recalculation, on top of a $27 million reduction in state funding the district was already bracing for \u2014 with the final loss expected to be even higher.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose schools that came in under enrollment lose dollars and allocations,\u201d Vazquez said in September 2025.<\/p>\n
To manage the imbalance, the district reassigned 116 teachers to fill 157 open vacancies across schools that fall.<\/p>\n
The financial pressure didn\u2019t start there. Heading into the 2025\u201326 school year, Vazquez warned the community that budget conditions were unlike anything the district had faced in recent memory.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo say that this has been an unusual budget cycle doesn\u2019t begin to explain what we have been dealing with over the last several months,\u201d she said. \u201cYou are going to see that we have fewer dollars to be able to continue the great work in Orange County Public Schools.\u201d<\/p>\n
Private school scholarships adding pressure<\/p>\n
A steady increase in students leaving for private schools through state scholarship programs has compounded the funding problem. For fiscal year 2026, OCPS estimated more than 30,000 scholarships directed students to private schools \u2014 totaling roughly $211 million that flowed away from the district\u2019s state revenue.<\/p>\n
OCPS Chief Financial Officer Doreen Concolino said at the time that the scholarship growth \u201cwill reduce the district\u2019s final state revenue appropriation.\u201d Nearly 31% of OCPS\u2019s budget for the 2025\u201326 school year came from the state of Florida, making enrollment-tied funding losses especially consequential.<\/p>\n
State Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith called the scholarship program a drain on public schools, saying the legislature \u201chas continued to bleed money out of our public schools through taxpayer-funded school vouchers.\u201d School board member Alicia Farrant, however, cautioned against pinning the budget problems on scholarships alone, urging the district to examine \u201cwhat is the reason parents are choosing scholarships to pull their child from their own public school.\u201d<\/p>\n
Focus on the final year<\/p>\n
Despite those challenges, Vazquez said her retirement announcement is not a goodbye. She described the upcoming school year as an opportunity to strengthen student achievement, support employees, and deepen partnerships with families.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday is about the future,\u201d she wrote. \u201cIt is about continuing the important work before us.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said she is committed to working with the Board of Education on the leadership transition, with her final day expected in June 2027.<\/p>\n
