Pitcher Tyler Phillips normally watches the end of games that he starts from inside the team\u2019s clubhouse. He gets some treatment, he relaxes and then meets up with his teammates after the final out.<\/p>\n
But something inside him on Monday night told him to get back to the dugout.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had to go out there and support them,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cPick them up however I can.\u201d<\/p>\n
What he saw unfold was something he was still trying to process about a half hour after the game ended.<\/p>\n
The Miami Marlins rallied for three runs in the ninth inning, stringing together five hits against Philadelphia Phillies All-Star closer Jhoan Duran for an emotional, cathartic 8-7 walk-off win<\/a> that snapped the team\u2019s franchise-record 12-game losing streak<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cGosh, man, that was awesome,\u201d said Phillips, who held the Phillies to two runs over five innings before Philadelphia scored five runs on Miami\u2019s bullpen to force the Marlins\u2019 ninth-inning theatrics. \u201cI know it\u2019s one win, but that was a big one for us. We needed that.\u201d<\/p>\n The win was Miami\u2019s first since July 9 when they capped off a sweep of the Seattle Mariners. Since then, they had been swept themselves in four consecutive series before finally stopping the bleeding, if only for one night, on Monday.<\/p>\n And it was a collective effort from a struggling offense \u2014 Miami (53-54) averaged just 2.5 runs per game over the losing streak \u2014 in that decisive ninth inning.<\/p>\n Center fielder Jakob Marsee and shortstop Otto Lopez began the heroics with back-to-back singles before first baseman Kyle Stowers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Esteury Ruiz entered as a pinch-runner for Stowers.<\/p>\n Left fielder Heriberto Hernandez, who homered earlier in the game, then hit a two-run single up the middle to tie the game. Second baseman Xavier Edwards hit a bunt single to load the bases again and set up right fielder Griffin Conine\u2019s walk-off single that went over a drawn-in Phillies infield and into shallow right field.<\/p>\n It was Conine\u2019s first career walk-off hit and, according to ESPN<\/a>, was the first time since the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2002 that a team snapped a 12-game losing streak after trailing by multiple runs entering the ninth inning.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve never been part of anything like the last two weeks,\u201d Conine, who also hit a home run earlier in the game, said of the Marlins\u2019 now-snapped losing streak. \u201cAt a certain point, it\u2019s the same way you feel when you\u2019re 0 for 15 at the plate. You feel like you\u2019re never gonna get a hit again \u2014 and that\u2019s not true; you know that deep down you will, but it\u2019s just the way it feels. It felt like we were never gonna win again. … It definitely wears on you.\u201d<\/p>\n As for what the win does for the Marlins?<\/p>\n \u201cThe pressure\u2019s off,\u201d Conine said. \u201cNow, we\u2019re on a winning streak. We\u2019ve won one in a row. Forget the last two weeks and move on.\u201d<\/p>\n Added Marlins manager Clayton McCullough: \u201cEverybody feels good. It\u2019s no lie that everyone in the building\u2019s been grinding hard now for a couple of weeks and frustrated with things. But certainly it feels great once you get a win and in the fashion that we did. It\u2019d be hard to ever question this group\u2019s toughness and willingness to compete. … It just speaks to the group of guys we have in that clubhouse that they just don\u2019t ever stop playing until it\u2019s over.\u201d<\/p>\n While the win was needed, the Marlins know they still have a long way to go to make up the ground they lost during this historic losing streak.<\/p>\n Prior to dropping the 12 consecutive games, Miami was tied with this same Phillies team they just beat for the National League\u2019s second wild card spot; they were a half-game back of the Chicago Cubs for the top wild card position and only three games back of the Atlanta Braves for the top spot in the National League East.<\/p>\n Now, they\u2019re in fourth place in the NL East and two games back of a wild card spot with four teams ahead them in the standings in that race for a playoff spot.<\/p>\n After once looking like shoo-ins to be buyers at the trade deadline on Monday, Miami now will focus more on moves that benefit the future without sacrificing too much from the present.<\/p>\n But for one night, for the first time in a while, the Marlins got to celebrate.<\/p>\n They hope there\u2019s more to come in the future.<\/p>\n \u201cWe finally won a game, and it felt great,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cEverybody was excited.
