The first in a five-part series examining key questions for the Miami Hurricanes before they begin fall camp and the 2026 season.<\/p>\n
Cam Ward rewrote the Miami Hurricanes\u2019 record book, was a Heisman Trophy finalist and became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.<\/p>\n
Carson Beck led Miami to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, where the Hurricanes fell just short of winning their first title since the 2001 season, and went on to be a third-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals.<\/p>\n
Now, it\u2019s Darian Mensah\u2019s turn.<\/p>\n
The third consecutive transfer quarterback to take the reins of Miami\u2019s offense in as many seasons, Mensah has high expectations on him both internally and externally as he tries to get the Hurricanes over that final hump and make them national champions.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s pressure that comes with that. After all, Mensah was sought after for a reason. Mensah won an Atlantic Coast Conference championship at Duke and, like Ward and Beck before him, is viewed as a potential high-end NFL draft prospect.<\/p>\n
Can he handle what\u2019s to come as he attempts to continue elevating the Hurricanes\u2019 program?<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think that anything is going to be challenging except staying where our feet are at,\u201d Mensah said earlier this month at the ACC\u2019s Football Kickoff in Charlotte. \u201cI think that what can make it challenging is thinking of the national championship right now. … There\u2019s expectation and pressure, but I kind of don\u2019t pay attention to that or feel any of that. I\u2019ve got a lot more on my plate to deal with than to look at the opinions of others. So yeah, I\u2019m not really focused on it yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mensah needed just a few short months to establish himself as a leader like his position requires. He earned his teammates\u2019 trust throughout spring practices, mastered the playbook and is ready to take ownership of whatever happens for Miami this upcoming season.<\/p>\n
Sound familiar? It should considering it\u2019s a nearly identical arc that both Ward and Beck took leading up to their season with the Hurricanes. Each took slightly different paths in getting there, but the end result at this to the leadup of the season matches.<\/p>\n
Seeing how successful Ward and Beck were in Miami\u2019s system under offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson played a key role in Mensah\u2019s decision to transfer to UM. He knows what can be done in one season because there\u2019s a track record for it now.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s proof of concept,\u201d Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal said. \u201cThose guys, you\u2019re looking at two elite guys. Cam … if I could get him back on an NIL deal, I\u2019d do that too. He was a guy that was an agent of change, and he knew that he had to do that to present himself as a more attractive selection for the NFL. They knew he could throw the ball. They knew he was accurate. They knew he could extend plays. Well, could he change the trajectory of the organization? And he did that with us. Carson had played at a high level but was looking to improve the level of play and the level of play of those around him, so it fit perfectly.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think Darian, in a similar way, has a lot of those different parts and pieces that relate to his transition as well. They\u2019re all elite human beings, and they\u2019re all different in their own way. But we were blessed to have those two, and we\u2019re beyond blessed again to have Darian now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mensah completed 66.8% of his passes for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns with six interceptions last season at Duke, which won the ACC title despite having five losses overall. His total passing yards led Power 4 quarterbacks last season. His passing touchdowns trailed only Indiana\u2019s Fernando Mendoza. Prior to his time at Duke, Mensah spent two years at Tulane where in 13 games he completed 66% of his passes for 2,723 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s not a pure runner, per se, but he has the ability to extend plays with his legs similar to how Ward operated in 2024.<\/p>\n
Mensah said he hopes playing under Dawson, who has shown he\u2019ll tinker with his offensive approach based on his personnel, will help maximize his potential this season.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe just leaves a lot of freedom to the quarterback,\u201d Mensah said. \u201cAs far as the NFL goes, that\u2019s what you\u2019re doing. You\u2019re seeing what the defense is doing, and you\u2019re telling your guys what to do based off of that. I feel like that\u2019s exactly what we do here at Miami. He\u2019s really good at forming the offense around the quarterback and not trying to make the quarterback fit into the offense.\u201d<\/p>\n
It worked for Ward. It worked for Beck.<\/p>\n
Will lightning strike three times and work for Mensah?<\/p>\n
