With hurricane season underway, Key Biscayne residents will have an opportunity Thursday to hear directly from a hurricane researcher and two of the Village\u2019s public safety leaders about preparing for a major storm.<\/p>\n
The Key Biscayne Community Foundation\u2019s Citizen Science Project will host \u201cHurricane Readiness \u2014 Are You Prepared?\u201d during its monthly Lunch & Learn at noon, Thursday, July 30, in the Island Room of the Key Biscayne Community Center.<\/p>\n
The panel will feature Dr. Andrew Hazelton, an associate scientist with the University of Miami\u2019s Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies who works in the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hurricane Research Division; Key Biscayne Police Deputy Chief Daniel Valdes; and Key Biscayne Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Terrence Davis.<\/p>\n
Long time resident Teri Scott will moderate the discussion.<\/p>\n
Each panelist brings a different perspective to hurricane readiness. Hazelton researches tropical cyclone forecasting and changes in storm intensity, while Valdes and Davis help oversee the Village\u2019s public safety and emergency-response operations.<\/p>\n
The discussion will give residents an opportunity to learn more about hurricane threats like storm surge, flooding, high winds and potential evacuation challenges, and steps households can take before a storm approaches.<\/p>\n
Lunch will be catered by Milanezza.<\/p>\n
The event is part of the KBCF\u2019s Citizen Science Project, created to promote natural-resource protection and education in collaboration with professional scientists. The KBCF does so by holding events such as mangrove cleanups, The Key Challenge, beach cleanups and monthly lectures like the one coming up Thursday.<\/p>\n
