It\u2019s summer in South Florida and the heat is on. We\u2019re all looking for ways to stop sweltering and cool down. Good news. There\u2019s a festival in Broward, that\u2019s guaranteed to make your blood run cold. Deco made it up to the Gateway Theatre to get the diabolical details.<\/p>\n
Get ready to have your mind blown at Fort Lauderdale\u2019s \u201cPopcorn Frights\u201d.<\/p>\n
Igor Shteyrenberg: \u201cThe largest genre festival in all of the state of Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n
That genre is horror, and there\u2019s more than enough to go around.<\/p>\n
Igor Shteyrenberg: \u201cPopcorn Frights is always a screaming good time, but this year, we\u2019ve leveled up, and we\u2019re gonna be offering our fans the most badass, the most exciting one of our largest lineups we\u2019ve ever had.\u201d<\/p>\n
Topping the list will be an early, special presentation of the Ewan McGregor-Anne Hathaway thriller \u201cThe End of Oak Street\u201d.<\/p>\n
Igor Shteyrenberg: \u201cIt is a cosmic nightmare film with dinosaurs and multiverses and everything that goes bump in the night.\u201d<\/p>\n
South Florida is always well-represented at \u201cPopcorn Frights\u201d. \u201cBand of the Hand\u201d, a cult classic shot in the Magic City, is on the bill.<\/p>\n
Igor Shteyrenberg: \u201cThis was a film that was produced by Michael Mann during his Miami Vice days in the 80s.\u201d<\/p>\n
Homegrown filmmakers get their chance to shine here. One example \u2014 the documentary, \u201cBest Served Cold: How a Revenge Film Was Buried for Decades\u201d.<\/p>\n
Eric Zaldivar: \u201cIt\u2019s about a lost, then found, then suppressed, and then finally leaked Columbia Pictures movie, a revenge thriller called \u2018The Farmer.’\u201d<\/p>\n
The Miami-born director \u2014 and his film \u2014 are back where they belong.<\/p>\n
Eric Zaldivar: \u201cSo I\u2019m very, very pleased that its premiere can be here in Fort Lauderdale.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the other end of the spectrum is the scary comedy, \u201cHorror Insurance\u201d. This deep dive into the dangers of monsters and insurance agents was shot in Sunrise. <\/p>\n
To say this short film was a labor of love is the understatement of the year.<\/p>\n
Chris Pinto: \u201cWe shot this movie at my house with a $95 budget. It\u2019s a bunch of friends that got together, all talented people in the industry, and made a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n
You don\u2019t need a big budget to get a big kick from being part of \u201cPopcorn Frights\u201d.<\/p>\n
