At 30 mph, the risk jumps to 45%, and at 40 mph, it soars to 85%.  <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"2\">Consultants said speed doesn\u2019t just impact what happens after a crash but also affects whether a crash happens in the first place. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react, narrow their field of vision, and significantly increase stopping distances.  <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"3\">The study analyzed crashes between 2020 and 2024, identifying nearly 5,000 crashes on major roadways and another 506 on local neighborhood streets. Speeding, distracted driving, lane departures, and pedestrian and bicycle crashes were among the top contributing factors.  <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"4\">City council members will discuss whether to accept the study, choose one of three implementation options, launch a public education campaign, and begin a second phase examining speed limits on collector and cut-through roads.  <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"5\">The goal is to create streets that are safer not just for cars but for everyone who uses them.
