{"id":356932,"date":"2026-07-30T00:05:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T00:05:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/356932\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T00:05:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T00:05:19","slug":"venezuelan-journalist-detained-by-miami-beach-border-patrol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/356932\/","title":{"rendered":"Venezuelan journalist detained by Miami Beach Border Patrol"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p data-has-dropcap=\"\">Venezuelan journalist Wilmer Roberto Solano D\u00e1vila was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection while working in Miami Beach, Fla., on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement provided to The Times on Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the journalist was detained over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn July 26, U.S. Border Patrol arrested Wilmer Roberto Solano-Davila, an illegal alien from Venezuela,\u201d a DHS spokesperson said. \u201cSolano-Davila has no status that would allow him to remain in the United States. He will receive full due process and remain in custody pending the outcome of his removal proceedings. To be clear, work authorization or a pending application do NOT confer legal status in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sergio Novelli, a fellow Venezuelan journalist based in the Miami area, reported in a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DbTsDF_pQhL\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Monday Instagram post<\/a> that Solano had been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>According to Novelli, Solano was in the asylum process and possessed a valid Florida work permit and driver\u2019s license. He added that the detained reporter entered the U.S. legally in 2015 and no criminal record in either Venezuela or the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Solano\u2019s relatives told Miami news outlet <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elnuevoherald.com\/noticias\/florida\/sur-de-la-florida\/article316685695.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">El Nuevo Herald<\/a> that the journalist was arrested during a traffic stop, in which he had not committed any traffic violations and presented proper documentation.<\/p>\n<p>A friend of Solano told El Nuevo Herald  the reporter was detained around 4 p.m. Sunday and was currently being held at a local CBP headquarters, but that he would soon be transferred to the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/12\/estados-unidos-nuevas-investigaciones-revelan-violaciones-de-derechos-humanos-en-los-centros-de-detencion-de-alligator-alcatraz-y-krome-en-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Krome ICE center<\/a> in Miami-Dade County. He also alleged that Solano had an immigration court hearing scheduled for Aug. 26.<\/p>\n<p>Solano\u2019s current location is not available through ICE\u2019s <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/locator.ice.gov\/odls\/#\/search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">detainee locator website<\/a>, which also locates <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/about\/searching-someone-cbp-custody\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">people who have been in CBP custody<\/a> for 48 hours or more.<\/p>\n<p>El Nuevo Herald confirmed that Solano had entered the U.S. in January 2015 with a journalist visa and applied for asylum in December 2015 after being persecuted by politician in his native Venezuela. He also had Temporary Protected Status beginning in 2021, but it expired in September 2025. <\/p>\n<p>In 2025, the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2025-07-07\/temporary-status-to-be-removed-from-roughly-80-000-hondurans-nicaraguans-after-25-years-in-us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump administration terminated TPS for 600,000 Venezuelans<\/a>, making them now all eligible for removal from the country. <\/p>\n<p>The 59-year-old journalist served as a politics reporter for the Venezuelan TV news network Globovisi\u00f3n from 2002 to 2008. He covered national political campaigns for the agency Zorro Comunicaciones CA, which he owned and where he served as director of news.<\/p>\n<p>Solano is at least the third Latino journalist detained by federal officials since the onset of the second Trump administration. <\/p>\n<p>Colombian journalist <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/delos\/story\/2026-03-17\/reporter-nashville-estefany-rodriguez-ice-detention-being-granted-bond\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Estefany Rodriguez was arrested by ICE agents in Nashville<\/a> in March. Rodriguez, who works for the local news network Nashville Noticias and Univision 42 Nashville, was detained during a traffic stop outside of a gym while with her husband. <\/p>\n<p>A DHS officials said she was arrested because her tourist visa had expired in September 2021. She came to the U.S. five years ago with a valid work permit and is married to a U.S. citizen. <\/p>\n<p>Rodriguez <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/nashvillebanner.com\/2026\/03\/25\/ice-immigration-detention-estefany-rodriguez-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">was released<\/a> after spending 16 days in federal detention.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, Salvadoran journalist Mario Guevara was <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/delos\/story\/2025-07-09\/mario-guevara-ice-custody-no-kings-protest-arrest-statement-released\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detained by ICE agents<\/a> as he was reporting on a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-06-14\/la-me-no-kings-marches-los-angeles\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cNo Kings\u201d protest<\/a> on June 14 in the Atlanta area. The reporter <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/17\/us\/video\/ice-arrest-protest-journalist-immigration-no-kings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">filmed his own arrest<\/a> because he was livestreaming.
