{"id":357266,"date":"2026-07-30T07:10:22","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T07:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/357266\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T07:10:22","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T07:10:22","slug":"dcps-ends-interview-when-asked-about-admin-pay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/357266\/","title":{"rendered":"DCPS ends interview when asked about admin pay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Jacksonville, Fla. \u2014 Duval County Public Schools ranks third in Florida for administrative pay and 24th for teacher pay, according to state data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Those numbers were the focus of a sit-down interview Wednesday with Superintendent Dr. Christopher Bernier ahead of the start of the new school year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Reports from the Florida Department of Education show Duval is also tied with Hillsborough County for the highest number of district administrative employees in the state. The district has 16 administrative employees whose salaries average about $170,000 a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">When asked why Duval can afford some of the state\u2019s highest-paid administrators but not some of the highest-paid teachers, Bernier pointed to the district\u2019s starting teacher salaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s only one district right now, that I\u2019m aware of, that beats us, and that\u2019s Nassau County for beginning teacher salary,\u201d Bernier said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\">&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE &lt;&lt;&lt;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Bernier said the state provided about $7 million for teachers with 10 or more years of experience, though he declined to discuss specifics because contract negotiations are ongoing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cI believe when we have extra dollars they should only go to one place. They should go to our employees,\u201d Bernier said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">[DOWNLOAD: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The superintendent also touted cost savings from changes to the district\u2019s leadership structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Bernier also defended the district\u2019s administrative structure, pointing to changes he says have reduced costs in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThis past year and the previous year before that, I eliminated a cabinet-level position and gave my COO and CIO one job to do together,\u201d Bernier said. \u201cThis past year I eliminated the Chief of Schools position, added a deputy superintendent. Both of those created about $200,000 to $250,000 cost savings each year in reduction of those salaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">[SIGN UP: <a href=\"https:\/\/membercenter.actionnewsjax.com\/newsletters\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter<\/a>] <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Bernier affirmed those changes demonstrate the district has already taken steps to reduce administrative costs while maintaining leadership positions he believes are necessary to run the state\u2019s sixth-largest school district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Later in the interview, we asked whether the district\u2019s level of administration is still necessary as enrollment declines and schools are consolidated.
