As expected, an early-morning rocket launch<\/a> in Florida July 30 generated a sonic boom.<\/p>\n

SpaceX launched a classified National Reconnaissance Office mission shortly after 3 a.m. July 30 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.<\/p>\n

The Falcon 9 rocket’s<\/a> first-stage booster returned to Cape Canaveral Landing Zone 2 about eight minutes after liftoff, which is what gave the sonic boom heard by residents.<\/p>\n

“A sonic boom is the thunder-like noise<\/a> a person on the ground hears when an aircraft or other type of aerospacevehicle flies overhead faster than the speed of sound<\/a> or supersonic,” according to NASA.<\/p>\n

The next rocket launch from Florida is scheduled for Aug. 5 from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.<\/p>\n
