TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) \u2014 New data from the Florida Department of Health showed a new surge of cyclospora cases across the state.<\/p>\n
As of July 25, 254 cases of the explosive-diarrhea-causing parasite have been reported in Florida since the outbreak was first observed on May 1.<\/p>\n
This is a jump of nearly 100 cases from 157 cases in the prior reporting period.<\/p>\n
Among the current number of cyclosporiasis cases, 248 have been confirmed, while the remaining six are classified as probable cases.<\/p>\n
The surge was seen most in Broward and Orange counties, which reported 10 and 15 new cases between July 19 and July 25. However, Miami-Dade remains the county with the highest number of reported cases.<\/p>\n

The FDOH data showed that out of the 97 new cases reported in Florida, 60 of them were acquired in Florida.<\/p>\n
Fifteen were acquired in the United States outside of Florida, nine were acquired outside of the country, and 13 were said to be unknown.<\/p>\n
The data also showed how different age groups were impacted by the parasite. The chart below shows which ones have the most.<\/p>\n
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say there are now 6,707\u00a0lab-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in the United States.<\/p>\n
Over 11,500 cases may also exist in the U.S. but have not been lab-confirmed.<\/p>\n
Symptoms include:<\/p>\n
Bloating, including burping and farting<\/p>\n
Extreme tiredness (fatigue)<\/p>\n
Sometimes cases can be asymptomatic, but symptoms typically begin within a week of infection. People can catch the parasite from contaminated water or food, including fresh produce.<\/p>\n
