LONGWOOD, Fla. \u2013 Construction is nearing completion on a project designed to relieve traffic and improve safety near one of Longwood\u2019s busiest intersections.<\/p>\n
After completing right-of-way acquisition, the Florida Department of Transportation is expected to begin work this fall on a stretch of State Road 434 near Ronald Reagan Boulevard.<\/p>\n
The intersection work includes the addition of dual left turn lanes for east and westbound traffic, and a new exclusive right turn lane on eastbound State Road 434.<\/p>\n
The project will also include bicycle lanes on State Road 434 from South Milwee Street to Ronald Reagan Blvd.<\/p>\n
Bill Moss lives in Longwood and is looking forward to the planned improvements for drivers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a dangerous intersection. It\u2019s bad all the way through, and they need to do something about it,\u201d Moss said. \u201cThey\u2019re always doing something around here, but it\u2019s progress.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition to added lanes in the area, safety improvements will be made at five signalized intersections between Rangeline Road and US 17-92.<\/p>\n
Planned improvements include sidewalk repairs, curb ramp reconstruction, and upgrades to pedestrian signals.<\/p>\n
Construction on the project is expected to begin in September, and lane closures will be needed.<\/p>\n
The traffic and safety improvements are expected to be completed in early 2028.<\/p>\n
