PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 What started as a routine traffic stop turned into a full-blown arrest for two men who thought they could outsmart the law.<\/p>\n
The Port St. Lucie Police Department said late Wednesday night, Ohmarion Kershaw and Nickolas Hernandez found themselves in hot water after a speeding violation on Crosstown Parkway escalated into multiple criminal counts. <\/p>\n
The vehicle, initially flagged for speeding and illegal window tints, failed to stop and continued onto SW Cameo Boulevard. Police did not engage in a pursuit; instead, other officers responded to the immediate area and quickly located the car and its occupants, but not before a failed attempt to switch seats and confuse PSLPD.<\/p>\n
Police said Kershaw \u2014 who was originally behind the wheel \u2014 swapped places with Hernandez in a last-ditch effort to dodge responsibility. Unfortunately for them, officers had already identified the driver. When contact was made on SW McAllister Lane, signs of impairment were immediately evident \u2014 alongside open containers found inside the vehicle.<\/p>\n

His night didn\u2019t end there.<\/p>\n Police said the men were arrested for the following: <\/p>\n Ohmarion Kershaw:<\/p>\n Driving Under the Influence (D.U.I.)Fleeing and EludingOperating a Motor Vehicle Without a Valid Driver\u2019s LicenseMultiple Citations: Excessive Speed, Window Tint Violations (x4), Open Container, and moreVehicle Towed<\/p>\n Nickolas Hernandez:<\/p>\n Resisting Without Violence<\/p>\n Port St Lucie Police Master Sergeant Dominick Mesiti said traffic enforcement on thoroughfares like Crosstown Parkway is important as they are hotspots for traffic violators putting the community at risk. <\/p>\n \u201cThere are times when we try to initiate a traffic stop, vehicles flee,” Mesiti said. “We don’t pursue and vehicles continue to flee at a high rate of speed and they do cause a crash.
