{"id":359276,"date":"2026-07-31T20:48:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T20:48:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/359276\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T20:48:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T20:48:07","slug":"jaa-wont-sue-city-after-airport-budget-dispute-asks-florida-legislature-to-clarify-roles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/359276\/","title":{"rendered":"JAA won\u2019t sue city after airport budget dispute, asks Florida Legislature to clarify roles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 The Jacksonville Aviation Authority and the City of Jacksonville announced Friday that the authority <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/politics\/2026\/07\/16\/jaa-to-vote-on-whether-to-sue-city-of-jacksonville-claiming-council-overstepped-authority-on-airport-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/politics\/2026\/07\/16\/jaa-to-vote-on-whether-to-sue-city-of-jacksonville-claiming-council-overstepped-authority-on-airport-budget\/\">will not file a planned lawsuit against the city over a dispute about the airport budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The two parties signed an agreement dated July 31 in which the JAA agreed to refrain from filing suit and both the city and the authority asked the 2027 Florida Legislature to provide \u201cclear direction as to the structure, roles, and responsibilities of the JAA,\u201d the agreement says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The move ends a standoff that intensified after the JAA\u2019s board on July 16 voted to allow outside counsel to file a lawsuit on or after Aug. 16 if the dispute was not resolved. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The dispute centers on whether the City Council overstepped its authority in matters related to the airport budget and on what expenditures the JAA can make under Federal Aviation Administration rules, the agreement says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In a joint statement, the JAA said it \u201cstands ready and willing to partner with the City of Jacksonville and the State of Florida to serve the people of our region and users of the JAA\u2019s four-airport system while fostering economic growth for the community.\u201d The statement said the authority seeks to operate \u201cin ways that are consistent with federal law, existing contracts, and the JAA\u2019s charter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The agreement notes that the JAA was created by the Florida Legislature and is an independent public agency that does not receive regular funding from the city.
