<\/a>OVIEDO, Fla. \u2014<\/p>\nThere is agreement between the two leading candidates for Florida governor that space exploration is an engine for the state\u2019s economic growth. <\/p>\n
Republican Congressman Byron Donalds spent Friday morning visiting a UCF research lab in Oviedo that produces simulated moon, Mars and asteroid soil <\/p>\n
“As your governor, I will make Florida the world headquarters for space exploration,” Donalds said.<\/p>\n
Before the Republican frontrunner in the race for governor announced his vision for expanding Florida\u2019s space economy, he sat down exclusively with WESH 2.<\/p>\n
“We believe it\u2019s going to be a multi trillion-dollar industry in our state,” Donalds said. “We do more launches than anybody and we want to make sure we have sites prepared not just for the launches, but for all of the manufacturing and the other ancillary parts of commercial space. We want that to come to Florida, not just for Florida\u2019s economy, but for the hard-working people of our state.”<\/p>\n
Donalds said if elected, in year one he plans to introduce legislation to expedite permitting for space industry projects.<\/p>\n
He said he wants to convene a space race summit with private sector partners, federal agencies and research institutions. <\/p>\n
Donalds also spoke about building a workforce pipeline. <\/p>\n
“This is not just an economy for engineers and scientists,\u201d Donalds said. \u201cFlorida needs our own welders, machinists, electricians and construction crews.” <\/p>\n
Donalds told WESH 2 creating more space industry jobs would help address a major issue on Floridians\u2019 minds this election season. <\/p>\n
“We talk about affordability so much all across Florida,\u201d Donalds said. \u201cOne of the things that helps people afford our state is a high paying job.”<\/p>\n
The leading Democratic candidate for governor David Jolly was unavailable for an interview Friday, but his campaign sent WESH 2 a statement. <\/p>\n
“Some issues aren’t political,\u201d Jolly said. \u201cByron and I agree: space should continue to be a cornerstone of Florida’s economy. NASA Headquarters would be a phenomenal addition to the Space Coast.”<\/p>\n
“If all the action is here, then why is NASA sitting in Washington to do what exactly?” Donalds said.<\/p>\n
WESH 2 asked the Trump-endorsed candidate whether he\u2019s spoken with the president about moving NASA HQ to Florida. <\/p>\n
