He starred at West Broward High School last season before transferring to Miami Columbus, the alma mater of Miami coach Mario Cristobal, in the offseason.

Sears is the fifth five-star prospect in the Canes’ 2027 class, which ranks in the top five nationally. Only Texas A&M, which has the No. 1 class, has more five-stars (six).

Recruiting services have listed Sears primarily as a cornerback, but evaluators believe he has the size, ball skills and route-running ability to become an impact receiver, too.

As a sophomore, Sears produced 61 tackles, 11 pass breakups, three interceptions and a forced fumble and caught 42 passes for 942 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“I don’t think I’ve had a player who is as talented on both sides of the ball,” former West Broward offensive coordinator Mario Perez said last December after the team lost in the Class 6A state championship game. “He can go to any school in the country to play receiver or in the secondary.”

Sears’ commitment represents another major victory for Cristobal’s effort to keep South Florida’s best players from leaving the region. Miami has recruited nationally throughout Cristobal’s tenure, and the Hurricanes have commitments from 12 players outside the state in the class, including the No. 1 players from Alabama, California and South Carolina.

But the foundation of the Hurricanes’ 2027 class has been built largely around elite prospects with connections to Florida, including five-star receiver Nick Lennear from nearby Miami Carol City. The other five-stars in the class are cornerback Donte Wright, edge rusher Jaiden Bryant and quarterback Israel Abrams.

Sears could become the headliner of the group. Miami established itself as the overwhelming favorite in his recruitment in the offseason while programs such as Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida, LSU, Oregon, Syracuse, Auburn and Texas A&M remained involved.

Wright and Sears could eventually give the Hurricanes two elite cornerbacks with the size and athletic ability to match up against top receivers. Lennear gives Miami a potential No. 1 receiver, while Abrams offers the class a centerpiece on offense.

Perez said Sears played cornerback, slot receiver, outside receiver, safety and special teams at West Broward. He could also align as a deep safety, play closer to the line of scrimmage or cover receivers in the slot.

Unlike some offensive stars who play defense primarily because they are the best athletes on their high school teams, Sears embraces the physical parts of the position.

“He loves to tackle,” Perez said. “He’s just all over the field. He’s an all-around player.”

Perez believes Sears can become an elite player on offense and defense because he combines physical talent with a complete understanding of the sport. Perez said Sears absorbs adjustments quickly when coaches explain how a route should be run against man coverage, two-high safety looks or split-field coverage.

Sears not only remembers the assignment, he asks why the adjustment works and then applies that knowledge during games. Perez said Sears would occasionally return to the sideline and identify a concept he believed would be open based on the defense’s alignment.

“We’ll do it,” Perez said, “and he’s usually open.”

Reclassifying means Sears, 16, will arrive at Miami one year earlier than initially expected. He’ll have less time to develop physically in high school and will need to prepare for the demands of college football on an accelerated schedule.

Perez believes Sears’ approach gives him a chance to handle that transition. “Everybody loves to play in the game,” Perez said. “But he loves the process. He loves the practice. He loves working out. He loves the challenge.”

That mentality, Perez said, spreads to the players around him. “It’s an enthusiasm that he brings,” Perez said. “It’s contagious.”

Perez said Sears’ future destination is easier to predict than his position.

“In five years,” Perez said, “he’ll be playing on Sundays.”

A’mir Sears, the dynamic South Florida two-way standout who has been compared to recent Heisman winner Travis Hunter,…

[9
143,4657,123,125,5079,124,2520,4699,4684,6762,10253
post-359355","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-miami","tag-college-football","tag-lsu-tigers","tag-miami","tag-miami-headlines","tag-miami-hurricanes","tag-miami-news","tag-michigan-wolverines","tag-notre-dame-fighting-irish","tag-ohio-state-buckeyes","tag-oregon-ducks","tag-texas-am-aggies
["GET
