A\u2019Mir Sears is staying home.<\/p>\n
The five-star athlete, who transferred this offseason from West Broward to Miami Columbus and just days ago reclassified from the Class of 2028 to the Class of 2027, on Friday committed to the hometown Miami Hurricanes to further bolster an already stacked recruiting class. He made the announcement at Dick\u2019s House of Sport at Dadeland Mall, just 2 miles from the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables.<\/p>\n
Sears chose Miami over Michigan, LSU and Texas A&M. His commitment gives Miami 21 players in its Class of 2027, which according to 247Sports now ranks second nationally behind only Texas A&M.<\/p>\n
Sears is now the fifth five-star recruit committed to the Hurricanes in the Class of 2027, joining Long Beach Poly (California) cornerback Donte Wright, Lombard (Illinois) Montini Catholic quarterback Israel Abrams, Miami Carol City wide receiver Nick Lennear and Columbia (South Carolina) Irmo edge rusher Jaiden Bryant.<\/p>\n
It wraps up the end of a busy week for Sears. Originally a member of the Class of 2028, Sears announced Tuesday that he was reclassifying to the Class of 2027 to graduate from high school a year early and get a fast track on his collegiate career.<\/p>\n
Three days later, Sears announced his future home, although the prep star said he had his mind made up on Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s still unbelievable that I\u2019m really here in this position,\u201d Sears said. \u201cIt\u2019s still kind of new to me. Everybody\u2019s just taking it in right now. Just just really grateful to be in this position.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sears had a large contingent of family and friends with him for the announcement. Several Hurricanes players, including a trio of local players in wide receiver Malachi Toney (who starred at Plantation American Heritage), safety Bryce Fitzgerald (a Columbus alumnus) and running back Jordan Lyle (a Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas alumnus), also showed up to congratulate him.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s that bond,\u201d Sears said. \u201cIt\u2019s just really instilling that Miami\u2019s where it\u2019s at. It\u2019s the crib. It\u2019s home.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sears, listed at 6-1 and 178 pounds, is the No. 11 overall prospect in the Class of 2027 according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He was viewed as the top player in the 2028 class before reclassifying.<\/p>\n
He was a two-way star last season on a West Broward team that reached the Class 6A state championship game. As a receiver, he caught 42 passes for 942 yards and 12 touchdowns. On defense, he had 50 tackles and three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.<\/p>\n
The Hurricanes are open to letting him play on both sides of the ball, an option that was enticing for him. He has drawn comparisons to former Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter.<\/p>\n
Sears said he\u2019ll play \u201cwherever they put me.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for what stood out about Miami over his other top options?<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was just that friendly bond and relationship,\u201d Sears said. \u201cJust them always checking up on me, just staying consistent throughout my whole recruitment since my freshman year. … Just for them to just reach out to me to be my first big offer was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n
What\u2019s also amazing for Sears: Miami\u2019s trajectory.<\/p>\n
The Hurricanes are coming off a run to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, falling just short of their first national title since the 2001 season. They\u2019re expected to be contenders again this season.<\/p>\n
And if Sears and the 2027 recruiting class has anything to say about it, they plan to make sure Miami stays in the national conversation for years to come.<\/p>\n
