Renovations are underway at the historic house where Beat novelist and poet Jack Kerouac<\/a> and his mother lived during the 1950s.\n<\/p>\n The house is owned by the Kerouac Project of Orlando<\/a> and serves as a place in which writers can reside and \u201chave a space to be creative and contribute to the community,\u201d said Genevieve Anna Tyrrell, president of the Kerouac Project. Although residency at the house was canceled for the rest of this year because of the renovations, nine writers are set to live there in 2027, according to the Kerouac Project<\/a>\u2018s website.\n<\/p>\n Tyrrell said that with preliminary work and estimates done, the Kerouac House was set to undergo major renovations beginning in the last week of July. The Kerouac Project hopes to overhaul the house\u2019s two bathrooms, bolster its foundation, and repair its chimney and floor.\n<\/p>\n Part of the tiles on a wall in the Kerouac House\u2019s main bathroom fell off earlier this year. A repair person saw that mold was behind the walls, which was part of why the house is undergoing renovations. (JOSHUA-PAUL ESTABALAYA)<\/p>\n \u201cThis has been a unique experience,\u201d said Logan Anderson, chief operations officer of the Kerouac Project.\n<\/p>\n Tyrrell said that thanks to Anderson, the Kerouac Project found Frank Roark, the organization\u2019s general contractor, who specializes in historical preservation. She added that Roark and the Kerouac Project want to preserve as much of the house\u2019s original look as possible \u201cto keep the charm of it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n In the room in the Kerouac House where the chimney is located, residents often host readings of their work for the local literary community. But failing patching around the chimney and water leakage partly prompted the Kerouac Project of Orlando to invest in renovations of the house. (JOSHUA-PAUL ESTABALAYA)<\/p>\n Roark suggested that instead of tearing out the damaged floor at the back of the house, which Kerouac and his mother used to walk on, renovations could preserve the floor with a sealant, Tyrrell said.\n<\/p>\n The renovations come as the house faces a few issues. A repair person earlier this year found mold in the main bathroom, Tyrrell said, and patching around the chimney is failing, causing water leakage and a stain.\n<\/p>\n \u201cMy concern is that if a hurricane comes \u2014 we get a lot of water and winds and rains \u2014 that wall [behind the chimney] could come down, or part of that wall could come down,\u201d Tyrrell added. \u201cAnd that\u2019s a danger.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Because of the renovations, two writers who were initially going to stay in the house this year had to reschedule their stays for 2027.\n<\/p>\n Tyrrell said the renovations will cost around $150,000, a price that\u2019s hard to pay for a small nonprofit like the Kerouac Project.\n<\/p>\n To cover the renovation costs, the Kerouac Project sold the property it owned behind the house for $392,000, Tyrrell said. With costs paid off, the Kerouac Project will put the cash left over into a high-yield certificate of deposit.\n<\/p>\n The property that was sold had been rented out to tenants, so without it as a source of passive income, Tyrrell said the Kerouac Project will need donors in the future to cover the cost of the historic house\u2019s maintenance and bills. \u201cWe are holding strong \u2026 but we will need help in the future to keep us going,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd we hope the community cares enough about us to want to do that.\u201d\n<\/p>\n As renovations are underway at the Kerouac House, past writing workshop exercises are still in the house, such as one in which participants practiced blackout poetry. (JOSHUA-PAUL ESTABALAYA)<\/p>\n Despite the challenges brought by the renovations, Tyrrell said she\u2019s \u201cexcited\u201d for and looking forward to a \u201crejuvenated\u201d Kerouac House without the risk of structural issues like collapsing floors and leaky walls.\n<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to the readings again,\u201d she added. \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to having those voices in the house and having the microphone and everybody collectively here again.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Anderson said the renovations have made the Kerouac Project closer to \u201cthe rest of the Kerouac historic community\u201d through connections with other projects centered on the Beat novelist in other locations. Tyrrell said one writer who was originally going to stay at the Orlando Kerouac House had to live in the St. Petersburg<\/a> house instead, for example.\n<\/p>\n Tyrrell said the renovations should take around three to six months to finish for the house to be ready for the first 2027 resident in February.\n<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20260723_150316-1024x768.jpg\")
