Miami’s offseason has been defined by two seismic events — the trade that brought Antetokounmpo to South Florida and the failed pursuit of LeBron James, who chose the Philadelphia 76ers — and the roster that emerged from those weeks still has an obvious opening on the wing.

Spoelstra choosing this moment to publicly embrace the group suggests the organization believes the foundation is set regardless of how the final addition shakes out.

The Klay Thompson holdup

That final addition has been the slowest-moving storyline of Miami’s summer, largely because the player the front office wants most is not actually a free agent.

Thompson, 36, remains under contract with the Dallas Mavericks for one more season, and the Heat have treated him as their clear top priority, even while less complicated options sit on the open market.

According to Chiang, Miami is hoping Dallas eventually agrees to buy out the veteran sharpshooter, because the trade route is close to unworkable.

“While a trade for Thompson is also possible, it would be challenging to pull off considering the only three players on the Heat’s current roster able to be traded for Thompson in a one-for-one deal are Nikola Jovic, Davion Mitchell and Bobby Portis,” Chiang wrote, adding that the cleaner path involves Thompson hypothetically surrendering about $7 million of his current salary to reach free agency.

None of those three trade candidates is a throwaway piece. Jovic signed an extension before last season, Mitchell was re-signed to run the point of attack, and Portis was brought in to stabilize the frontcourt behind Adebayo.

Sending any of them to Dallas for a 36-year-old shooter on an expiring deal would solve one problem by opening another, which is why Miami has been content to wait on a buyout that Dallas has so far shown no urgency to grant.

DeRozan’s price tag changes the math

While the Heat wait on Dallas, the most accomplished scorer on the open market has put a number on his patience. During Thursday’s episode of the “Clutch Scoops” live stream, which ClutchPoints posted with hosts Tomer Azarly and NBA insider Brett Siegel, Siegel reported that DeMar DeRozan has no intention of signing for the veteran’s minimum.

“It doesn’t seem like he wants to take a minimum contract,” Siegel said. “He probably wants to get around that $8-$10 million range to recuperate some value that he lost from Sacramento waiving.”

That range collides almost exactly with what Miami has available. As covered here earlier this week, the Heat are protecting roughly $8 million remaining on their midlevel exception and committing all of it to DeRozan would leave nothing behind for Thompson if the Dallas situation ever breaks loose.

The stream also addressed that overlap directly, noting the DeRozan situation is effectively being held up by the Thompson question — whether the four-time champion gets bought out or is moved to Miami in a deal that could involve Jovic heading to Dallas.

The Heat do not have the luxury of deliberating forever. DeRozan, who turns 37 next month, scored more than 18 points per game for Sacramento last season while shooting just under 50 percent from the field, and the Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards have emerged as strong suitors. Miami already learned this week that it is not the only team circling, and every day spent waiting on Dallas is a day another front office can put real money in front of a six-time All-Star.

Beal represents the third branch of the same decision tree. The veteran guard is coming off a lost season with the Los Angeles Clippers and remains unsigned, which keeps him available at a price point Miami could reach — though his recent injury history explains why he has not jumped the queue.

Why Spoelstra’s confidence matters anyway

Set against all of that uncertainty, Spoelstra’s Friday comments read less like cheerleading and more like a signal about how the organization views its floor.

The core that will open training camp — Antetokounmpo, Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, Tim Hardaway Jr., Jovic, Mitchell, Portis and young wings like Pelle Larsson behind them — is locked in, and the coach is telling anyone listening that the identity of this team will not hinge on which veteran takes the last meaningful roster spot.

There is recent precedent for taking him at his word. Spoelstra has spent his career extracting career years from veteran additions, and the “like-minded pros” framing echoes the way he has talked about his best locker rooms.

It also lands at a moment when the fan base could use the reassurance. The days since James chose Philadelphia have featured a steady drip of outside skepticism about whether Antetokounmpo has enough help, and Adebayo has already pushed back on the idea that the East runs through anyone else.

What happens next comes down to sequencing. If Dallas softens on a Thompson buyout, Miami’s patience will look prescient and the midlevel money will have been protected for exactly the right player.

If DeRozan signs in Cleveland or Washington first and Thompson stays a Maverick into the fall, the Heat will open camp betting that internal growth and Spoelstra’s track record can cover for the addition that never came.

Friday’s comments suggest the coach has already made peace with either outcome, and with a roster headlined by two All-NBA talents, that is a more defensible position than it would have been a year ago.

Either way, the coach has now put his voice behind a group that is still one decision short of finished. The front office’s job over the next few weeks is to make sure that decision is worth the wait.

The Miami Heat still have one meaningful roster question left to answer this offseason, and on Friday morning,…

[9
137108,8088,54429,123,125,2490,124
post-359912","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-miami","tag-demar-derozan","tag-erik-spoelstra","tag-klay-thompson","tag-miami","tag-miami-headlines","tag-miami-heat","tag-miami-news
["GET
