PALM COAST, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Deputies became firefighters in a matter of moments Wednesday after finding a trapped homeowner screaming for help as flames closed in on a Palm Coast home. <\/p>\n

Law enforcement responded at 2:24 p.m. after a passing driver reported smoke coming from a home on Westmoreland Drive.<\/p>\n

When deputies arrived, they were met with thick black smoke pouring from the front door. As they searched the property, they heard someone screaming for help and found the homeowner on the back patio, unable to move and only feet away from the flames.<\/p>\n

According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office<\/a>, deputies helped the man to his feet and led him to safety while another deputy used a fire extinguisher to keep the flames from spreading.<\/p>\n

The homeowner was safely evacuated before crews from the Palm Coast Fire Department<\/a> and Flagler County Fire Rescue<\/a> arrived and fully extinguished the fire.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not every day we are firemen too,\u201d said Sheriff Rick Staly<\/a>. \u201cSituations like this are why every deputy\u2019s patrol vehicle is equipped with a fire extinguisher, and deputies are trained for any emergency. I commend our deputies for hearing the screams and rescuing the homeowner.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cause of the fire and the homeowner’s condition have not been released at this time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PALM COAST, Fla.
