Sending a winning lottery ticket through the mail probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think “risky move,” but a South Florida woman found out the hard way that it can go very wrong. According to Florida Lottery officials, a U.S. Postal Service worker allegedly swiped a $2,600 winning ticket out of the mail stream and cashed it in for herself before anyone even knew it was missing.<\/p>\n

The accused, 28-year-old Lakaysha Lockhart of Hollywood, Florida, was arrested on July 23 following a joint investigation by special agents with the Florida Lottery and the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General. She’s now facing a stack of charges that includes grand theft, dealing in stolen property, filing a false claim for payment, unlawful use of a two-way communication device, and mail theft, reported the Orlando Sentinel<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It’s the kind of story that makes you wonder just how many hands a piece of mail passes through before it reaches your mailbox, and how much trust we place in that whole system without a second thought. Most of the time it works exactly like it should. This time, allegedly, it didn’t.<\/p>\n

Here’s how it played out, according to court records and the Florida Lottery’s account of events.<\/p>\n

A Winning Ticket Headed the Wrong Direction<\/p>\n

A woman in Tampa bought a Pick 4 ticket in June and scanned it the following day, discovering she’d won $2,600. Rather than cash it in herself, she mailed the ticket to a relative in Fort Lauderdale to help cover funeral costs for a loved one, according to a probable cause affidavit.<\/p>\n

It’s a thoughtful gesture that a lot of us can relate to, wanting to pass along good fortune during a hard time.<\/p>\n

The problem is that ticket never made it to its destination. When the woman realized the letter carrying it hadn’t arrived where it was supposed to, she reported what officials called “a suspicious condition incident” to Florida Lottery.<\/p>\n

How the Ticket Was Traced Back\"Image<\/p>\n

A Florida Lottery inspector discovered that the ticket had already been redeemed on June 19, at the Florida Lottery’s Miami District Office, by none other than Lockhart, who at the time worked as a Level 2 City Carrier at a post office in Oakland Park.<\/p>\n

She’d joined USPS in April 2025 and, according to a Miami-Fort Lauderdale postal spokesperson, is still technically employed there, though currently off duty while this plays out.<\/p>\n

Following her arrest, Lockhart allegedly admitted to taking and cashing the ticket herself, according to the Florida Lottery’s news release.<\/p>\n

What Happens Next<\/p>\n

Lockhart has since posted bail and been released, though she hasn’t entered a plea yet. Attorney information wasn’t available as of Friday. Because the alleged theft and the fraudulent redemption happened in different counties, she’ll be prosecuted in both Broward and Miami-Dade.<\/p>\n
