FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the move is intended to alleviate pressure on air traffic controllers during the staffing shortage resulting from the government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are trying to lean into the fact that when we see pressures building in these 40 markets, we just can\u2019t ignore it,\u201d Bedford said at a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecDuffy\/status\/1986176980874621191\">press conference <\/a>on Wednesday. \u201cWe are not going to wait for a safety problem to truly manifest itself when the early indicators are telling us we can take action today to prevent things from deteriorating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During an appearance on Fox &amp; Friends on Thursday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the delays and cancellations will be based on where air traffic controllers are not showing up to work.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWill you step up to support New Times this year?\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"fundraising-thermometer-body\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. I want them to come to work and do their jobs, but that\u2019s the reality that I deal with, so you\u2019ve seen a lot of delays and cancellations through the airspace. It changes every single day based on which controllers are coming to work and which ones are not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are assessing the risk in the airspace. Delays and cancellations will be based on which controllers are coming to work.<\/p>\n<p>Reducing 10% of flight volume will reduce the pressure on controllers, while prioritizing safety, and getting more flights out on time. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AbMyfyJCV0\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/AbMyfyJCV0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Secretary Sean Duffy (@SecDuffy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecDuffy\/status\/1986437253552275509?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">November 6, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The FAA has not ruled out cutting additional flights if the shutdown and staffing issues persist. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the pressures continue to build even after we take these measures, we\u2019ll come back and take additional measures,\u201d Bedford added. <\/p>\n<p>New Times is awaiting word from Greg Chin, communications director for the Miami-Dade County Aviation Department, about how these flight reductions will impact travel through MIA.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, multiple airlines have issued statements regarding refunds and potential flight disruptions.<\/p>\n<p>American<\/p>\n<p>American said the majority of its customers\u2019 travel will not be affected, and long-haul international travel will remain as scheduled. If flights are changed, the airline will contact the affected customers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo provide additional flexibility during the impacted travel period, customers whose flights are cancelled for any reason or who choose not to travel will be able to change their flight or request a refund without any penalty,\u201d the airline <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/news.aa.com\/news\/news-details\/2025\/An-update-on-the-FAA-directive\/default.aspx\">said in a press release<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Delta <\/p>\n<p>Delta also expects its flights, including all long-haul international travel, to operate as scheduled. The airline is allowing all customers, including those flying basic economy, to change, cancel, or receive a refund for their flights without penalty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will work to give customers as much notice as possible about any changes to their flights and apologize for any inconvenience these changes may cause,\u201d the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/news.delta.com\/delta-cares-customers-reduces-flights-beginning-nov-7-compliance-faa-directive\">company said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>JetBlue<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, JetBlue will automatically rebook customers on the next available flight if their flight is affected, the company announced Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your flight is cancelled and you decide not to travel, you can request a full refund,\u201d the<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jetblue.com\/travel-alerts\"> airline added<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>United <\/p>\n<p>In its press release, United CEO Scott Kirby said long-haul international and hub-to-hub flights will not be impacted. The company will instead focus its reductions on regional and domestic mainline flights that do not travel between its hubs. Kirby added that it will still offer around 4,000 flights per day. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd importantly, any customer traveling during this period is eligible for a refund if they do not wish to fly, even if their flight isn\u2019t impacted,\u201d the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.united.com\/en\/us\/newsroom\/announcements\/cision-125419\">press release states<\/a>. \u201cThat includes non-refundable tickets and those customers with basic economic tickets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Southwest <\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/support.southwest.com\/helpcenter\/s\/article\/faa-flight-reductions\">Southwest<\/a> said that it would automatically rebook canceled flights in most cases, though customers whose flights have been canceled are eligible for a refund if they would rather not travel.<\/p>\n<p>Frontier<\/p>\n<p>Frontier <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfrontier.com\/alert\/?mobile=true\">expects its flights to operate as planned<\/a>.
