The August primary elections are getting underway. An eight-day stretch of early in-person voting will start on Saturday, Aug. 8, in Palm Beach and Broward counties.

If you’re hoping to head to the polls early, here’s what you need to know.

Where can I vote?

The early voting period will last from Aug. 8 to Aug. 16 in the two counties. Palm Beach County will have 28 early voting sites, open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m each day.

Weekends tend to be busier during the early voting period, said Alison Novoa, spokesperson for the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Office.

But the office’s website offers a convenient feature for early voting: You can check the wait times at each polling location.

Broward County will have 21 voting locations, open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Lisa Lee Arneaud, spokesperson for the Broward Supervisor of Elections, said “mornings and evenings are typically busiest” at the polls, “while midday is generally less busy.”

Broward has extended its early voting hours, Arneaud said, “to make early voting more convenient.” Poll sites are now set to open at 10 a.m. rather than the originally-planned 11 a.m.

Registered voters in Palm Beach and Broward counties can vote early at any early voting site in their county. They are not limited to the polling location listed on their voter information card.

In Palm Beach County, voters also can schedule a 15-minute appointment to vote during early voting hours.

Florida voters can also go the traditional route and cast their ballot on Primary Election Day, Aug. 18. On that day, voters can vote at their assigned polling location, which is available on their voter information card and on the supervisor of elections websites.

Early voting locations

What do I need to bring?

Voters must bring one form of valid identification that includes a photo and signature. If voters bring a photo ID without a signature, they can supplement that with a second ID that has their signature on it, such as a credit card or debit card.

Permitted forms of ID include a Florida driver’s license or ID card, a U.S. passport, a military ID, a student ID, debit or credit card, or a concealed weapon license. Other acceptable photo IDs include retirement center, neighborhood association, public assistance, veteran health or government employee IDs.

Voters who do not bring their IDs will still be allowed to cast a provisional ballot, which will then be reviewed by each county’s Canvassing Board to determine if it is eligible.

Which races are on my ballot?

The August primary includes races for federal offices such as U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative. State-level races for Governor, Chief Financial Officer, Commissioner of Agriculture, State Representative and State Senator will appear on the ballots, as will local races for county commissions, school boards and more.

In Florida, voters can only vote in the primary of the party with which they are registered.

Still, certain races, including School Board races, are nonpartisan and open to all voters. Others are “universal” contests, where all candidates have the same party affiliation and the winner won’t face opposition in the general election. Those contests are open to all voters as well.

To check your voter status and view a sample ballot, visit the elections offices’ websites at votepalmbeach.gov for Palm Beach County, or browardvotes.gov for Broward County.

The August primary elections are getting underway.
