In a release<\/a>, police said the School Zone Speed Safety Program will transition from issuing warnings to issuing citations beginning Aug. 11.<\/p>\nPart of Lakeland\u2019s Vision Zero initiative<\/p>\n
Officials said the program launched earlier this year as part of Lakeland\u2019s Vision Zero initiative, aimed at reducing traffic-related injuries and improving safety for:<\/p>\n
Students and school staff<\/p>\n
Pedestrians<\/p>\n
Motorists<\/p>\n
The city said 14 automated speed enforcement cameras are positioned near eight school locations across Lakeland.<\/p>\n
Warnings so far<\/p>\n
Since the cameras were activated, the city said drivers caught going more than 10 mph over the school-zone limit during active school-zone hours have received warning notices.<\/p>\n
Starting Aug. 11, those warnings will be replaced with civil citations.<\/p>\n
How the camera enforcement works<\/p>\n
According to police, the cameras:<\/p>\n
Only monitor traffic when the school-zone flashing lights are active<\/p>\n
Capture images when a vehicle is traveling\u00a0more than 10 mph over the posted limit<\/p>\n
Have each potential violation\u00a0reviewed and approved by the Lakeland Police Department\u00a0before a citation is issued<\/p>\n
If approved, officials said a $100 civil citation will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.<\/p>\n
