PALMETTO, Fla. \u2014 The Snead Island Crab and Fish House in Palmetto has until Aug. 10 to correct code enforcement violations as its owners continue cleanup from hurricanes Helene and Milton.<\/p>\n
The city of Palmetto\u2019s code enforcement office sent owner Susie Trudeau a letter about a week ago citing property maintenance and other violations, with a due date.<\/p>\n
The bait shop has been owned by Adam Trudeau\u2019s family since 1972. Trudeau said the 2024 storms damaged the property and delayed the family\u2019s efforts to reopen.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m trying to get it up and running from the storms that wrecked the place from Helene and Milton,\u201d Adam Trudeau said. \u201cJust kind of threw us back some, but we\u2019re just trying to get it up and running back to where our family business can keep flowing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sandbags and debris remain on the property after the hurricanes. Community members have donated time, equipment, and labor to help the family clean up.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am thankful and thank God for the community and for the people,\u201d Susie Trudeau said.<\/p>\n
Susie Trudeau said she spoke with code enforcement and that someone from the department is expected to visit the store. She said she is determined to keep cleaning and keep the family business going.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf it\u2019s meant to be, the good Lord is going to provide,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd so far, he hasn\u2019t let me down.\u201d<\/p>\n
Palmetto Mayor Dan West said the city wants to work with the Trudeau family as they rebuild. West said he also wants to see consistency in the cleanup efforts and that a hearing where the business could face fines or other discipline would be initiated only as a last resort.<\/p>\n
For the Trudeau family, the cleanup is tied to keeping the business going for future generations.<\/p>\n
