There are currently 61 vacancies.

Awilda Torres with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the county will rely on trainers, supervisors, deputies and field service officers to help cover gaps.

“Our trainers will go out, supervisors will go out, and then we also notify the comms center where our deputies will go out and also our field service officers,” Torres said.

As for the crossing guards who will direct students across streets in the new school year, they recently completed final training. The training included reminders about changing road conditions, including self-driving vehicles, e-bikes and e-scooters.

“Waymos — they are not leaving no time soon,” Torres said of the self-driving vehicles.

Crossing guards are preparing for students who arrive on e-bikes, e-scooters and regular bicycles. Guards are trained to ask students to get off those devices before crossing the street.

“Some parts are challenging, especially when they don’t want to dismount from their bikes or the scooter,” school crossing guard trainer Belinda Maldona said. “But I gained trust from the students, and they wind up doing it.”

Orange County Public Schools recently implemented a ban on micromobility devices for students who do not have a driver’s license or learner’s permit. Crossing guards will not enforce that policy.

“Parents should be more involved with the mobility and what is safe for their child. We only can do as much as we can,” Maldona said.

Maldona, who has worked as a crossing guard in Horizon West for two years, is now a trainer but is expected to continue working in crosswalks because of the shortage.

The job can be difficult to fill because crossing guards typically work one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon.

“Please join our team,” Maldona said. “It is very important. If you want to do something for the community, join us. It is a wonderful job.”

The shortage is similar to previous years, but as Orange County grows and roads change, officials said finding the right fit has become more difficult.

Crossing guards in Orange County are paid $18.18 an hour.

For information on becoming a crossing guard in Orange County, click here.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Thousands of Orange County students are expected to return to class next week by…

[11
137530,4996,9995,2967,274,2173,2175,54547,113,115,1335,139,141,140,277,9429,15849,278,6390,2180,729,2177
post-364756","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-orlando","tag-app-back-to-school","tag-app-education","tag-app-latest-education-stories","tag-app-public-safety","tag-app-top-stories","tag-app-traffic-transit","tag-app-traffic-and-transit","tag-back-to-school","tag-education","tag-news","tag-orange-county","tag-orlando","tag-orlando-headlines","tag-orlando-news","tag-public-safety","tag-sarah-winkelmann","tag-school-safety","tag-top-stories","tag-topic-latest-public-safety-crime-stories","tag-topic-latest-traffic-transit-news","tag-traffic","tag-traffic-and-transit
["GET
